The CIO urged large wage rises and offered a study showing real wages lagging 15 percent since January 1945 after war deductions. Murray aims to press for raises with U S Steel and others starting April 30 and seeks a pension plan.
The US Public Health Service proposes a 12 minute fluoride treatment campaign to cut dental decay in children by 40 to 50 percent. Children would receive washes at ages 3 7 10 and 13 over ten years. Officials seek 1.5 million dollars post June 30 to train about 1000 technicians who would train dentists and assistants.
Senator Taylor of Idaho predicts a united nations centered plank will anchor Henry Wallace's third party. He says the new party aims to win in 1952, backs UN actions, opposes the Marshall Plan as is, and endorses UN decisions on aid and Palestine partition to preserve world peace. Taylor warns delay could lead to war.
Wallace tells 2000 delegates at Pennsylvania Progressive convention that he will not rejoin Democrats and that the Truman Doctrine and government policies favor the same interests. He says the issue is the doctrine, not Truman personally, and that the party adopts the name Progressive, or third party, with Wallace calling it the new party.
The commerce department announced that most businessmen may discard records kept for goods and services under the price control program. Exceptions require continued record keeping until possibly November 9, 1949 for parties to pending actions and several subsidy or government payment groups. Rice records must be preserved.
A bomb exploded yesterday at the Cairo residence of Haj Amin el Huseini, former grand mufti of Jerusalem and a leader of Arab factions in Palestine. No injuries were reported.
A midnight explosion at Interlake Chemical in Waltham leveled a two story plant. Two workers were killed, two missing, 29 injured. authorities planned daybreak searches. Names of missing or dead were provided, and damage was estimated at 150000 dollars.

Four sacks with explosives were found overnight and a detonator placed nearby to allow the engine and cars to pass before detonation. Armored cars patrolled the point ten miles south of Kilkis. The party including Gen. Gregoropoulos and American officers inspected 37th brigade installations after traveling from Salonika.
A Payette county criminal court jury acquitted John Kelly aged 40 of Brownsville of fatally stabbing neighbor Isaac Benjamin last Feb 14. Kelly testified he acted in self defense after a quarrel over a washing machine left in the apartment corridor.
FBI agents announce David Almeida 33 and his wife Anna Almeida 31 confessed involvement in the January 9 1947 theft of 114000 from the New Orleans bank. Almeida signed a statement admitting aid to the robbery and receiving a 25000 share. Police say four other gang members sentenced to 20 to 35 years.
Pennsylvania Democratic state leaders filed nominating petitions to place President Harry S. Truman on the April 27 primary ballot. J Warren Mickle said Truman’s name will appear despite no required signature. delegates to Philadelphia would be unpledged but expected to back Truman. Congressional and party figures outlined other statewide races and candidacies in both parties.
Nineteen inmates escaped from the Dekalb county prison near Atlanta. Nine were recaptured hours later as officers and bloodhounds hunted the 14 black and 5 white prisoners who fled on foot from the camp kitchen.
Over the weekend nine people died in Pennsylvania auto accidents with the rest hospitalized. Fatalities occurred Saturday in Phoenixville Imperial Dilltown Seward Berwick Lansdale among others as victims included Mrs. Booth and her 12 year old daughter Eleanor Valley Forge and residents of Malvern Johnstown Philadelphia Milesburg and Philadelphia area workers.
Freddie Gastley age 17 a Somerset high school junior died from a rare bone cancer at Somerset Community Hospital 6 am Sunday after a December onset and hip amputation. Despite a heroic effort his condition worsened and he died in an oxygen tent. He was born August 22 1930 survived by his parents eight siblings and was a Gray Mine area newspaper carrier. Funeral at Gray Christian and Missionary Alliance church Wednesday at 3:30 with Beam Cemetery interment.
Pilots Richard Ward and Robert Biggs made a forced landing in a Berlin field Sunday at 6 pm while low on fuel. They departed Pittsburgh, passed through Harrisburg and Washington, landed safely behind Burress Dively’s home, faced cold conditions, then sought money for fuel and hotel before planning to return to Pittsburgh.
District No 94 Jr O U A M met Friday evening in the Eagles hall South Edgewton avenue with Wesley Ross presiding. Officers and members spoke, Liberty Bell Council reported a tin cezyee team ready for action. Somerset council hosted visitors. supper was served at the Pine Grill.
An auto crash on West Main Saturday night sent Edward Bus Barron hospital with cuts and bruises after his eastbound coach struck a parked vehicle. The Barron car caught fire but the fire crew arrived after the blaze was out. Two wrecked cars were wedged and towed apart while a crowd gathered near Countryman’s Furniture.
Senator Byrd of Virginia voiced doubt about the fate of civil rights legislation. He warned that southern traditions and constitutional rights may be sacrificed as national parties seek minority votes in northern and western states. He noted the road to passage is very difficult and cannot predict outcomes.
Daniel M. Kimmel was elected head of Dairy Improvement Association No. 2 at the Agricultural Extension office. Other officers include William Brantriedens as vice president Fred Ross as secretary treasurer James Barrett Boswell and Philip Jaiter Rockwood on the executive committee. The group has 28 members with herds totaling 503 cows Betty a graded Holstein led milk producers with 1804 pounds and butterfat 793. The unions not hurt by Taft Hartley act saw 684 wins and four losses in 689 union show elections over four months in Washington.
A weekend highway crash on Route 31 about ten miles west of Somerset near Kooser Park killed Clark W. Miller 25 of Rockwood R D 2 and later Miss Mary Ellen Nagle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Nagle of Confluence. Four others were injured including James H. Cane Sanford Henry Barbara Parnell with injuries ranging from lacerations to serious head and chest trauma. The crash involved a car driven by Cane and a fishing truck operated by Homer C. Smith. Miller died at Somerset Community Hospital from concussion and chest injuries. Miss Nagle died Sunday evening from a fractured skull. The truck sustained about $4000 in damage. The accident was investigated by Pvt Dan Fodor of the Pennsylvania State Police. Funeral services for Miller are set for Tuesday at 2 30 p m at Middlecreek Church of the Brethren.
