A Miami jury acquits Candace Mossler and her nephew Melvin Powers of murdering her husband Jacques Mossler after seven weeks of testimony. The verdict ends a high profile case linking a lavish fortune to a brutal killing that shook Florida.
Joseph Molter, 43, held without bail on homicide charges for a $500 holdup at a Northeast Philadelphia loan company that left two employees dead and two wounded. Police traced the suspect after a tip from off duty officer Lanard and Molter was arrested and arraigned.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Sen. Fulbright says danger of war with China is real and announces hearings to expand public understanding of China. He cites open-ended Viet Nam conflict and calls for efforts to alter fatal war expectancy. Secretary Rusk warns of broader dangers if U.S. commitment to South Viet Nam wavers.
Somerset County high school students excel in the Driver Improvement Essay Contest sponsored by the Insurance Information Office of Pennsylvania. Daniel Ritchey of North Bedford High won first place with a $100 savings bond, Elizabeth Dale Rock of Meyersdale Area High took second with a $50 bond, and John Young of Shanksville Stonycreek tied for third with two others, earning a $25 bond. Honorable mentions went to Martha Hartle, Patricia Bowser, Pamela McFeaters, and Sallie Foust.
In New Delhi Prime Minister Indira Gandhi says India cannot press for an immediate Viet Nam settlement but may assist later through roles with both South and North Viet Nam. She warns India’s food shortage may worsen in months and affirms sincere support for the Tashkent rapprochement with Pakistan.
Somerset County Board of Assessment schedules real estate assessment hearings for March 9 and 10 in the County Commissioners Office. During yesterday's Somerset County drill, two Army classes for Company C aimed at solving logistical problems were led by Major Lewis M. Tuggle and Sgt. Robert E. Knight from Johnstown. A morning session on equipment inspection and 2404 forms preceded an afternoon on radio operation with testing, plus an 18 member detail to Ligoniers for tank readiness. Roll call totaled 74 soldiers and three officers. The annual Master Day open house was praised and will recur next year with next drill set for March 21.
