President Eisenhower sends a letter to Soviet Premier Bulganin proposing a safeguarded disarmament system and a freeze on atomic stockpiles. Bulganin reacts positively while Moscow broadcasts the letter and notes study is needed.
John W. Spangler a 21 year old Navy veteran from Somerset was admitted February 28 to Somerset Community hospital with a chest wound from a .25 caliber pistol. He was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday night after several days of serious condition.
Henry Jordon aged 55 from Middlecreek township received a finger amputation after an accident on Seven Springs farm. He was admitted to Somerset Community hospital around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with the injury.
Israeli Premier David Ben-Gurion warned that a second Arab-Israeli war is more likely, saying Israel would fight and likely win if forced into conflict. He cited Russian weapons to Egypt and U S arms requests as key factors, while Parliament defeated a move for non confidence in his coalition. Jordan's Arab Legion, led by Gen Glubb until last week, looms large in regional tensions.
James Meyers eight and Robert Cribbs ten fell from a barge into the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh during a rescue attempt. Passerby and a policeman pulled them out and they were treated for exposure at a hospital. Robert humorously said he preferred to stay overnight to avoid a spanking and school tomorrow.
The Associated Press reports a varied weather system across the United States. Central Indiana endured tornadoes causing deaths and injuries in Marion and Dunnington while Illinois Buckley and a Lexington area faced damage from wind and tornado events. record highs appeared in the mid Mississippi Valley and South including 101 in Laredo Texas.
The 66th annual Somerset County School Directors Association convention featured Judge Kessinger as the keynote speaker. In the business session Chester Long and Galen R. Peck were elected county board members, with Long to serve six years for district No. 1 and Peck for two years for district No. 5. Atty. Gen. Brownell announced the justice department will drop an antitrust case in the motion picture field as more movies become available for television showing. The Los Angeles federal court had ruled that 12 major producers and distributors conspired to restrain 16 millimeter film to TV outlets, a 1952 accusation. No appeal will be filed.
Linda Saylor, 62, of Holsapple R. D. 2, received dispensary treatment for a finger laceration at Somerset Community hospital after a glass cut at a Somerset dairy bar.
The International Union of Electrical Workers withholds answer to a government plan to end the Westinghouse strike. The plan offers five years on a new contract and a minimum five cent hourly wage boost plus pension and insurance gains. Carey says decision may come days later.
Somerset volunteers will receive a $2000 gift from the Sesqui Centen nial board after a dinner meeting at the Somerset Country Club. The board also allocated about $700 each to the Mary S Biesecker Public Library and Somerset Community Hospital and the Children's Aid Society, ending the Sesqui Centen nial association.
An 18 year old soldier who sparked a mild crime wave in northern Somerset county last month will likely be sentenced March 19, District Attorney Frank A Orban said. Robert L Bailey of Dayton Pennsylvania waived grand jury action Tuesday on charges from a service station burglary and theft of two cars in the Stoystown Hooversville area. Bailey also faces Army authorities after prosecution ends and is jailed in Somerset County. He was arrested February 28 in Hooversville by Police Chief Dominick J Bonitz after hitchhiking there following abandoning his second stolen car in Johnstown the prior Sunday. He broke into Fleagle service station Route 30 near Stoystown looted merchandise worth about 24 dollars and fled in the owner’s car, then drove toward Hooversville, crashed the car, and fled with a second vehicle.
Four Somerset County Farmers joined peers in Washington to meet Congressman Richard M. Simpson and discuss the Pennsylvania Farmers Association and American Farm Bureau program. They attended the congressional dinner and reported wide support for the farm group’s priorities, including voluntary social security and soil bank provisions. Somerset American introduces the Little Merchant Plan with a new weekly 24 cent rate for Little Merchant Carrier Salesmen. Subscriptions paid before March 5 stay at the old 10 dollar yearly rate, monthly prepayment is via the carrier, and carriers record payments on punched cards to speed settlements.
Somerset budget shows February 1955 meter collections at 1236.75 dollars up 3.8 percent from February 1954. Year to date receipts total 2461.59 dollars, a 3.3 percent drop from the same period in 1954.
William J. Meyers of Berlin RD 4 was released from county jail Tuesday after posting 500 bond to appear for court on an assault and battery charge. Meyers was arrested Monday over a family fracas, as charges were filed before Justice of the Peace H. S. Whipperman of Somerset.
The Agriculture Department reported 1955 farm income at 19.045 billion dollars, with per capita farm income about 80 dollars, less than half the nonfarm average. Senate debates focus on price supports and the soil bank, while a House-passed tax exemption for farm gasoline awaits final action.
Boston March 6 A unique chain letter pledge to President Eisenhower was launched by Rep Charles Gibbons of Stoneham Republican floor leader in Massachusetts. The letters go to Republican state committee chairs and urge them to mail copies to at least five people. If the chain lasts eight steps it could reach 93 750 000 recipients.
The House passed the final version 123 74 joining 39 Democrats with 84 Republicans and the Senate approved 26 20. The plan exempts electric telephone and telegraph services but taxes gas steam and fuel oil. Tax stamps will be used as receipts and threshold rules set on item classifications with many goods taxed. Gas and utility items face levy while food remains exempt.
Adolph Fram of Peoples Cab Co and Armand Carlomango of Local 128 Taxicab Drivers Union were jailed after a near fight outside the courthouse following a state labor board hearing. Fram faces firearms act and disorderly conduct charges. Carlomango is charged with disorderly conduct.
Newsweek reports Eisenhower told Vice President Nixon to consider withdrawing as a candidate for re election. The White House denied the account while Newsweek claimed the president offered a cabinet spot and sought a free hand in choosing a running mate later.
