A H Hollander known as Budd celebrates a quarter century in business with a March anniversary sale at Budd’s Shoe store in Somerset. Since arriving in 1923 and opening the Budd Shoe store in 1952, he has built strong ties with local residents and moved to the Fisher building in 1936.
Two Republican candidates filed petitions Tuesday for Somerset County offices open in the May municipal primary. Names listed include Elizabeth Pyle of Middlecreek township Rockwood and Astella B. Buckman of Somerset borough with roles as tax collector and majority inspector in the northwest district.

A Central City family survived two separate daytime blazes that gutted the Elmer Buffey residence. Fire Chief Andrew Schanko and neighbors credit a two year old child’s crying for alerting the family to deadly smoke as flames from an overheated furnace consumed most of the house. The second blaze, discovered later that day, reduced the structure to its foundation. Loss is estimated at $12,000 with partial insurance coverage.
Glenn William Zerfoss 19 of Berlin R D 1 was released from Somerset county jail on a $5000 property bond pending appeal after a Criminal court jury convicted him of an attack by force on a neighbor girl and of fathering an illegitimate child as a result of the assault.
A mass meeting to push plans for a Somerset county development commission will be held at 7 30 p m Wednesday in Somerset courthouse. Speakers include J Eric Jones of the Pennsylvania commerce department and Walter P Schenck of the state chamber of commerce. Assemblyman Harry A Naugle invites county clubs to attend. The group aims to promote county welfare through industrial development tourism recreation highways and publicity.
Seven crewmen leaped to safety as a fire destroyed a Navy blimp on the Weeksville Naval air station runway near Elizabeth City North Carolina. A wheel gear collapse ruptured the gas tank but no injuries were reported.
A Portland gambler testified before a Senate committee that he and Portland district attorney William Langley were involved in a “white wash” of the Oregon state liquor commission amid a racketeering inquiry. He claimed two indictments were kept by Langley, as hearings focus on Teamsters influence in Oregon and Washington.
Two former Truman administration officials, Matthew J. Connelly and T. Lamad Caudle, were sentenced to two years in prison and fined 2500 each after conviction for attempting to sidetrack the tax case against Irving Sachs. Judge Gunnar H. A meeting for active and inactive instructors will be held at the Red Cross offices on Wednesday March 13 at 7 30 p.m to assess available instructors.
Secretary of State Dulles pressed Egypt to clear and reopen the Suez Canal within about ten days now that Israel plans immediate withdrawal from Egyptian territory. He suggested U S aid leverage may be used and noted naval passage should resume for private ships via the Strait of Tiran into the Gulf of Aqaba as normal private shipping.
Somerset borough reports a 25.2 percent year to date rise in parking meter income through March 1 1957 totaling 3083 dollars, up 621.41 from the same period in 1956. February 1957 collections reach 1515.18 dollars up from 1236.73 dollars in February 1956.

A fire in Somerset Tuesday broke out on a car owned by George Barkman and caused between 50 and 75 dollars in damage. Fire Chief Newton B. Picking said a short circuit in motor wiring started the blaze, which at 10 30 a m disrupted uptown traffic briefly.
LA report states Lance Reventlow receives a Beverly Hills hillside home worth 400000 as a birthday gift from Barbara Hutton on Feb 23. Features include an indoor outdoor pool a 15 foot waterfall electrically operated draperies and a high end kitchen. The house lacks a living room but has a den playroom dining area and two bedrooms. Lance plans to stay six months of each year while racing in Europe and remains unmarried.
Pennsylvania's Senators Edward Martin and Joseph S. Clark voted with the majority to pass the Middle 1st resolution 72-19. They earlier opposed Morse amendment requiring presidential advance troop notice. Curtis amendment to end the program by March 15 1951 was defeated 58-30. Martin opposed Mansfield amendment. Clark supported it, adopted 48-43.
