A five member Commission to Preserve the Peace in Alabama charged Tuesday that two civil rights organizations and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. promote the Communist line. The report cites King SCLC SNCC and CORE as threats to sovereignty and accuses SNCC of seeking campus pressure to move King leftward. King called the charges an attempt to deny democracy in Alabama.
A volatile trading session on the New York Stock Exchange saw extreme early buying push prices higher, followed by a sharp selloff before closing with the best daily gain of the year. The Dow rose 10.81 to end at 851.40 as 10.5 million shares changed hands.
Premier Kosygin told a Kremlin crowd the Communist forces near victory in Viet Nam require the United States to withdraw and accept a Vietnamese-led peace. He warned American raids must end and urged adherence to 1954 Geneva terms while pledging more Soviet aid as North Viet Nam fights on.
