Striking AFL dairy workers in Pittsburgh voted against a proposed contract return to work. William Matthews, vice president of Local 205 AFL Milk and Ice Cream Salesmen and Dairy Employes, said the vote to reject the dealers’ new contract proposal was about 1429.
At Calvary Methodist church the Somerset Lions heard reports from state convention sessions and enjoyed an interlude of comedy by Mr. Wilkinson from Youngwood Lions. A picnic for District 14 E was announced for Idlewild on June 28 with games for children and a Lions Queen trial scheduled for 7:30 pm.
Paris reports reveal Socialist members of the national assembly plan to desert the Bidault cabinet in a vote of confidence over a salary issue for government workers. If the opposition wins 311 votes, the government would quit, though a last minute compromise was anticipated amid Schuman plan negotiations.
President Robert Sproul recommended to the UC board of regents that 157 university employees be fired for not signing a non Communist affirmation.
Ithaca police report Cornell university librarian Victor Steinhart 26 and his wife Lee 25 denied Communist affiliation after Matt Cvetic an FBI informer named them before the House Un American Activities Committee as Communist party members. Officials said no secret government work exists at Cornell with only work at Buffalo’s aeronautical lab. Steinhart and his wife helped form the Progressive party in Pittsburgh after the war.
Kermit Ross Wingard aged 39 of Somerset was jailed by Justice of the Peace Charles J. Harrison Jr on a desertion and non support of minor children charge. Nicholas Rosco Thomas of Rocky Mount NC served five days for a motor vehicle violation and was released after paying 13.50 in fines and costs.
Miss Naomi Elizabeth Reiley spoke at the Somerset Rotary about life in Dillingham Alaska where she has served as directress of nurses at Kanakwak hospital. She outlined Alaska’s postwar focus on communications, military installations and health, with slides showing Juneau and Anchorage.
The Somerset Community Band under Chester L. Singer will open the summer series on the court house plaza at 7 30 p m with ten selections including Selections from Oklahoma and March of Champions. The Civic Improvement Committee announced the change and future concert dates will be announced as scheduled.
Senator Lodge said state department loyalty files on 81 persons are unfinished and cannot settle the issue. The matter contrasts with Senator Tydings who argues the study will yield a true or false picture. The committee also sought a Justice Department record on John S Service amid allegations of transmitting military secrets to Philip Jaffe. Service denied any such disclosure.

Judges valued appearance cadence marching maneuvering general effect and play.
Chinese nationalist airmen report a gunboat shot at five attacking planes off Swatow harbor as they attacked a 4,000 ton freighter. The communique says the gunboat, unnamed and unflagged, fired from within Chinese territorial waters, while a British navy spokesman in Hong Kong declined comment.
Walter Alessandroni state commander of the American Legion warned 56 post leaders and guests at a Legion Day gathering in the Ferner hotel that the U S must desist from expanding defenses too quickly. He argued for fewer but stronger defense programs carried out with dignity to counter communism, noting Russia and the United States as global leaders and predicting Europe would follow the strongest nation.
