Decapitated Donora Man Identified in Pittsburgh River

The decapitated body of Ernest Alonzo, 28, an unemployed Donora resident, was found in the Monongahela River near the 10th Street Bridge. Fingerprints identified him. autopsy noted the head severed after death. Police doubt the Mad Butcher case linked to this killing. Alonzo, born in Mexico City, had lived in Donora 22 years.

Axis Subs in Caribbean Pressed by U S Convoys

A Caribbean port reports Axis submarine activity from the U S east coast through the convoy system. In a 12 day period June 3 14 thirteen ships were sunk with 770 aboard, including 135 passengers. Seventy five survivors have been brought ashore, many needing clothing. Dozens remain missing or adrift. Lifebelts saved lives as crews returned to sea aboard other vessels.
