Federal agents arrested 17 Communist leaders and aides in dawn raids, spread across New York and Pittsburgh, as part of a broader government effort to dismantle the party. Bail ranged to 83,000 dollars, with indictments pending and more suspects sought.

Atlantic Gulf ship operators twice offered wage hikes to idle seamen but rejected a 40 hour week. NMU creditors held to 40 hour weeks while proposing 8 percent base wage increases and a 44 hour week at sea with 40 in port. On June 20 in San Francisco the CIO American Radio Association walked out of negotiations with the Pacific Maritime Association derailing early settlement hopes. Phillip O Rourke said the talks are broken up and negotiations are off. Earlier Matson announced a 4 p.m. sailing of the Lur line was canceled but hopes remain for Honolulu. Federal conciliator Omar Hoskins said differences were clarified and narrowed.
Five miners charged by George Moldoon Jr. of Acosta with beating him at Belmont Inn plea not guilty at a hearing before Squire Charles J. Harrison Jr. Frank Olexa admitted striking Moldoon after Moldoon's wife struck him with a beer bottle. All five posted bond. another assault charge was filed against Olexa by Mrs. Moldoon.
83 pints of blood were collected at the Red Cross bloodmobile in Somerset on Wednesday, 52 short of the 135 quota. Walk in donors at Calvary Methodist Church increased totals. organizer Mrs. Jane Friedline urged greater public awareness of blood needs for armed forces and local hospitals. A Fayette county donor traveled to Somerset with three companions, saying her donation was inspired by blood saved at Price hospital in Confluence.
Pfc. Michael James Czarniewsky aged 21 of Central City died in action in Korea on May 27 while serving as a jeep driver with the 24th division. He enlisted July 16, 1949, trained at Fort Dix and Camp Hood, and was sent to Korea last July. He had told his parents he expected to return home soon and hoped to marry.
Rockwood and Meyersdale properties changed hands in midweek deeds recorded by the county recorder. Earl E. Bowman purchased Lot 98 on Main Street in Rockwood for about 5000, while Pearl W. Smith bought a property on Broadway and Penn in Meyersdale for about 8000.

Washington June 20 The strike of United Air Lines pilots was sent to President Truman for emergency action grounding 220 daily passenger flights and 132 transport flights. The mediation board gave up on wage talks and urged an emergency board to investigate.
Communist forces retreated on the eastern Korean war front after 21 days of delaying actions. Allies gained control of the last high ground near the Punchbowl north of Inje, while central and western fronts saw Reds hold and repulse patrols. Air battles over Manchuria saw heavy losses on both sides, with multiple Mig and Sabre engagements and several Reds damaged or destroyed. The Inchon area was blacked out after an unidentified enemy plane strafed the port scene.
Mrs. Maxine Schrock of Meyersdale was installed as secretary of the county council of VFW auxiliaries at Hooversville community hall. Mrs. Ruth Dia presided with eight of ten auxiliaries represented. Committees were named for the year including bond chair, radio, community service, civil defense and junior activities. Reports from Everson encampment were given, and a ward party for Aspinwall hospital patients was planned. Members from Holsopple, Hooversville, Windber, Central City, Somerset, Meyersdale, Berlin and Jennerstown attended.
Arnold S. Johnson, temporary chair of the western Pennsylvania Communist party, says his arrest by FBI agents at the Pennsylvania Station was illegal and violated constitutional rights. He appeared before U S Commissioner Snodgrass with attorney Hymen Schlesinger, bond set at 15000, hearing reset to Friday.
Two cars traveling toward Rockwood collided on Route 653 about two miles east of Rockwood at 5 p m causing 175 dollars damage. Raymond Brooks of Manor Hill hotel attempted to pass Allen Nagel of R D 1 Rockwood as Nagel veered left into a private driveway. No injuries reported.
Cober Braucher of North Franklin Avenue deputy secretary of internal affairs sails as a civilian guest aboard the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. The ship left Norfolk with 50 civilians for undisclosed maneuvers. Joseph Nissley secretary of the Harrisburg board of pardons also joined the cruise.
Iran rejects mediation and orders full control of Anglo Iranian Oil Company operations under nationalization law. Mossadegh vows oil will flow, while Britain warns it will protect British lives and seeks The Hague court action.
Harrisburg report states Sen John H Dent who leads 20 Democratic senators argues no new taxes or budget cuts are required to resolve the tax budget deadlock. He says revenues could cover two years of state costs and urges passing the governor’s budget as listed.

Reports from the Vatican indicate Most Rev. Thomas J. Toolen bishop of Mobile will become head of the Philadelphia archdiocese succeeding the late Cardinal Dougherty. Toolen native of Baltimore, 65, has led Mobile 24 years and earlier served in Baltimore including St Bernard's parish.
