At the Somerset Country Club 165 SAR members honored Lt Gen Edward J Stackpole former 28th division commander. Present were Lt Gen Edward Martin Maj Gen Henry K Flack and Stackpole who received the SAR Good Citizenship medal. He recalled Civil War era devotion and World War I and II service. Washington reports a broad rise in May living costs pushing the consumer price index to 1.24 times the 1947 49 base. Food housing clothing and medical and personal care costs edged higher while factory workers average weekly earnings rose to 81.03 for a four person family and 73.49 for a single worker.
