Goon named in Senate hearing claims order to kill senator

Former FBI undercover operator Joseph Mazzei testified that Lou Bortz boasted at a Pittsburgh secret Communist meeting last December 4 that he had orders to liquidate Senator McCarthy. Mazzei said Bortz led red goon squads and helped train in bombs and weapons at a basement range. Bortz declined to confirm the kill claim. The hearing, led by Senator McCarthy, adjourned with plans to resume next week.

Central City Men Jailed for Stealing Copper Wire

Two Central City men Donald Kline age nineteen and Harold Ankeny age thirty four were arrested by state police for stealing copper wire from a Somerset county mine. They appeared before Justice of the Peace C J Harrison and were charged with larceny and committed to the Somerset county jail.

The Cumberland Cement and Supply Co. filed a complaint against Salisbury lumber dealer C. A. Maist in the prothonotary's office seeking $491 for building materials delivered in 1951.

Insurance Office Robbed Of 350 In Checks And Cash

The district manager of the Pennsylvania Life Health Accident Insurance Co reports a lunch hour robbery on the second floor of the First National Bank Building in Somerset. About 350 in checks money orders and cash were stolen, including cash 115, with stamps and useless post office items also taken. Police and post office inspectors investigate and urged stop payment on affected items.

Draft calls for 1659 to meet July quota

State selective service headquarters announced a July induction quota of 1509 with 1659 draftees called. For July, inductions will come from Harrisburg 322 Philadelphia 513 Pittsburgh 615 Wilkes Barre 183 and Buffalo NY 26, while June quota was 452.

Pennsylvania Electric Company expansion financing approved

The public utility commission authorized Pennsylvania Electric Co of Johnstown to sell 19.8 million dollars in securities to cover construction costs. The utility serves about 330,000 customers in 22 counties and plans a 95 million dollar expansion to be completed in 1955 with 12.5 million in bonds and 7.3 million in stock.

Martins Help Pocalana Fight Army Worm Invasion

A wheat field pest invasion by army worms devastated a Somerset area lawn. Mrs. Pocalana watched thousands march from the field to her yard, spraying failing until a flock of martins arrived from Somerset to feast on the worms, restoring green grass and drawing neighbor attention. The pests had damaged wheat on the Darr farm before moving to the Pocalana lawn.
