Ray Earl Ray captured after Brushy Mountain escape
James Earl Ray was recaptured near Brushy Mountain Penitentiary after two days on the run, muddy and exhausted. Gov. Blanton urged President Carter to take custody to avoid more Tennessee taxpayer costs as Ray faces possible state escape charges or loss of good time. A bloodhound tracked Ray to within eight miles of the prison, with Ray aided by Earl Hill Jr. and Douglas Shelton during a slow nighttime escape.

Somerset Borough Approves Three Year Police Contract
Somerset Borough Council approved a three year police contract to be sent to police negotiators for signature after the terms are kept confidential until signed. The meeting also agreed to resurfacing North Kimberly Avenue with 70 percent funding from a federal program and to spend 45000 for Appalachian Regional Commission funds to extend a water transmission line to Somerset Township industries with fire protection issues. Additional actions included loitering ordinance study and approval of six directional signs for the Dressler Center for the Arts not yet installed.
