Senate Republicans tentatively agreed to trim 40 million from Gov. Lawrence 1959 61 budget. The move depends on a Sunday meeting of GOP leaders. Cuts could rise to 60 million in the 1 872 billion general fund. The governor dropped a planned 5 increase in car registration fees citing better revenue from gasoline taxes and a higher cash balance.

Joel Montgomery a 12 year old seventh grader from Denver captured the National Spelling Bee crown and the $1000 prize after spelling through tough words on the final day. He edged out Bobby Crossley of Center Square Pennsylvania with both missing the same root word vinagrous amid a field of 70 hopeful competitors. Joel becomes the first boy winner in five years and the top girl finishers trailed with Elaine Hassell and others in the top ranks.
