Government managers of mines announce possible leniency for miners facing fines. Lewis denounces the move as unwarranted and illegal, urging opposition to the arrangement and insisting on proper penalties.
Secretary Ickes announced no fines against anthracite miners and described a plan to allow a path to escape fines through collective bargaining with government mine managers. He noted existing agreements require fines for work stoppages and outlined dispute procedures while citing ongoing wage-board decisions and unrelated regional walkouts.
Nearly 1,600 miners at Berwind-White pits Nos. 30 37 and 40 in Windber voted to strike in protest of the war labor board's refusal to approve the 1.30 portal to portal pay and Harold L. Ickes 9 fine for absences on the June 15 action. Local 6229 of the United Mine Workers, in Somerset County, reported unanimity with only No. 37's night shift absent.
Harrisburg reports both Governor Martin and Liquor Control Board Chairman Frederick Gelder denied plans to start liquor consumer registrations next month for rationing. They said no decision had been made on rationing.
Michael Dirienzo 36 of North Center avenue was killed when his delivery truck struck a bank near Odd Fellows cemetery at Confluence and overturned pinning him. He left home Friday at 2 pm. survived by his widow Frances and four children and several siblings. Funeral plans incomplete.
Two Somerset county youths were arrested on charges of stealing and mutilating five parking meters in front of Detective H. C. Jacobs home on East Union Street and along North Edgewood Avenue late February. A third suspect was named Samuel Bittner, 22, of Rockwood R D. He is jailed on a license suspension case. Ex Sheriff Lester Wagner helped arrest Peter Carolus of Milford Township, with another alleged member under suspicion. Two more youths connected to the theft were named, bringing the total to five meters and 65 cents recovered.
Allied headquarters in Australia reported that bombers dropped 42 tons on Koepang in Timor and 19 tons on Rabaul in New Britain yesterday. The communique noted Koepang lies on Timor's southwest tip about 500 miles northwest of Darwin while Rabaul stands as a major Japanese base on New Britain's northeast coast.
Twelve people were overcome and several burned when fumes from an ammonia tank leak spread through an ice cream production room at Meadow Gold Dairies in Pittsburgh. Mary Ruane, 22, suffered serious burns. eight others were hospitalized.
Two small army planes landed on the Pennsylvania turnpike at the New Baltimore station Friday afternoon. One plane was damaged and the other intact. Initial plans call for an on the scene repair and a takeoff attempt Saturday if the second aircraft can be repaired.
The South Fork American Legion post in Pennsylvania repudiated its apology to John L. Lewis for Roane War ing remarks and rescinded its resolutions. An investigating committee found actions violated post instructions and the group deplored the language used. Waring had attacked Lewis in Memphis prompting the controversy.
Havana reports a Cuban patrol vessel sank an enemy submarine off the north coast in the Atlantic after a battle. The claim, announced by War Minister Aristides Sosa de Quesada, follows a high level conference with President Batista and navy, army, and police chiefs in the presidential palace. Batista authorized publication.
The Community hospital board of directors met Friday night to plan the annual stockholders meeting. Routine business was disposed of with H. R. Reed presiding as president. All members except one attended the session.
The House approved sweeping anti strike legislation 219 to 129 sending it to the Senate. The bill bans strikes in government operated plants and in war industries without 30 days notice and a workers vote, empowers the war labor board, and bars union political donations. It carries penalties for agitation or financing strikes with potential jail for leaders like John L. Lewis if a coal strike resumes.
In Birmingham on June 11 two Alabama mines idled about 365 workers after a strike tied to Ickes order imposing one dollar per day fines on participants. Brookside-Pratt Blossburg shaft with 215 workers continued paying wages but deducted no fines yet. Marvel No. 3 Roden Coal, with about 150 workers, stopped operations.
American war planes shot down 38 Japanese aircraft in two air battles over the Solomon Islands this week, outscoring the enemy by more than five to one. Seven American planes were lost with four pilots rescued. One Zero was destroyed by ramming after a plane was lost.
More than 200 American heavy bombers attacked Wilhelmshaven and Cuxhaven in daylight missions from British bases. The raid hit U boat yards and harbor installations, with eight bombers reported missing and many enemy planes shot down. This marked the 62nd American air attack of the war.
