Pittsburgh Bonding Firms at Board Meeting

Five Pittsburgh bonding firms sent representatives to the Somerset joint district school authority meeting at Somerset high school. They discussed handling fiscal affairs for the new building program including a Maple Ridge elementary, an addition to Somerset high school, and an addition to the old Somerset township high school in Friedens. The authority will meet June 15 to select a bonding firm.

Churchill Says Korea Armistice Path Now Clear

London June 9 Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons the path to an early Korean armistice is clear but warned South Korean opposition may jeopardize peace. He urged completing administrative steps and avoided committing Britain to admitting red China to the United Nations. He faulted South Korean President Syngman Rhee for hindering truce talks amid criticism of Gen Clark and Gen Harrison by Labour MPs.

Radar Screen Traps Turnpike Speed Demons

New Brunswick reports radar speed traps on the New Jersey Turnpike. A mobile radar unit records speeds over 60 mph and radios license numbers to troopers ahead for arrest. The system, with shifting locations, helped cut accidents in the first quarter of 195 as compared with last year.

Somerset County Hosts First Grassland Field Day

Somerset County's inaugural Grassland Field Day drew over 3,000 farmers and families to the Emerson S. Suder farm near Meyersdale for silage demonstrations and homemaking exhibits. County Agent C. C. McDowell supervised activities with James Bochy and Mrs. Janet Symes while 22 farm machinery dealers showcased about 100 modern machines.

DeGasperi Narrow Victory in Italian Senate Win

In Rome on June 9 Italy's pro American center coalition led by Alcide De Gasperi edged a Senate win with 50.2 percent of votes and 12,196,258 to 12,103,388 for the opposition. Police guarded the Viminale Palace as returns rolled in and deputies assess the Chamber of Deputies tally.

Truck crash kills driver on Route 22 near Flemington

Harvey R. Deckert of Fredericksburg Pa. was killed when his trailer truck hit wrecked cars on Route 22 in Lebanon borough. A spectator, William Vanderbeck of Lebanon N J, was critically injured and taken to Somerset County Hospital. The truck carried coal and went through warning flares before impact.

Youthful forger mix up ties victim to fraud case

Wayne Miller of Friedens R D 2 was misidentified as a defendant. The actual pleading youth was Wayne Miller of Friedens R D 1 Acosta, who forged a check in the name of Wayne Miller R D 2. The victim is the Friedens R D 2 man. Eugene Roadman of Stahlstown accompanied him.

Judge Hears Arguments In Several Somerset County Cases

Judge Lansberry heard several matters in Somerset county court on Tuesday including Steve S Strashensky versus Russell Holsapple and Windberborough Midland Credit Corp versus J E Herring and John Kochan versus Carl R Hershey. Richard W Bittner of Sipesville won an appeal to recover his operators license after a September 1952 speeding incident on Route 30 in Westmoreland County. He was cited for 60 in a pickup truck restricted to 40 and had no extenuating circumstances.

Garrett Man In Hospital After Truck Overturns

Charles L. Donaldson 26 of Garrett was admitted to Somerset Community Hospital Tuesday after his truck overturned near Garrett. He received injuries to the back and right leg and his condition is listed as fair.

Tornado toll rises in Michigan and Ohio towns

A sweeping tornado outbreak across Michigan and Ohio killed at least 140 people in nine cities, with Flint reporting 112 deaths. Over 1,000 injured and millions in property damage followed six garage twisters along a 350 mile belt near Detroit. Families wiped out and many children among the dead.

GOP Opens New Effort To Tax Sales In Harrisburg

In Harrisburg on June 9 the GOP led House Ways and Means Committee revived a 1 percent sales tax plan calling it a final showdown. The move split along party lines with Democrats opposing. A separate Democratic-backed constitutional amendment would pave a graduated income tax, needing multiple legislative votes and a people’s majority. Rep. Worcester Tornado Plains Central Massachusetts Slaughter

A devastating June tornado swept Worcester and surrounding towns, killing about 50 and injuring over 300. Holden and Shrewsbury bore the heaviest damage with around 100 houses flattened in each town as rescue operations continued and authorities mobilized.
