Gov. Shafer warned that Pennsylvania could face a tax crisis next year if the legislature rejects his standby personal income tax plan. He urged adoption as part of a broader tax package and signaled openness to revisions while opposing a state lottery to ease tax burdens.
Israeli forces defeat Egyptians in five Sinai battles and claim control of main approaches to the Suez Canal. Col. Moshe Pearlman says climactic fighting centered at Bir Gafgafa near Ismailia. Egypt agrees to cease fire as UN Security Council action unfolds.
The Red Cross bloodmobile will be at the United Church of Christ in Rockwood from 2 30 to 6 30 p m. Organizers strive to meet the quota through donor participation asking residents to give a pint of blood today if possible.
Patchy clouds and heat with humidity build through Friday. Thunder shower chances rise in the north Saturday afternoon or evening as highs reach the 80s. More humid with a warm weekend ahead.
Somerset State Police reported a tractor trailer driven by Archie Bowser of Stoystown going around a curve on Route 53 south of Somerset at about 1 p.m. Thursday. Bowser lost control, the rig damaged 10 guard rails, with $460 of damage to the vehicle and $100 to the rails. The rig was owned by Boswell Lumber Company.
U S Navy ship USS Liberty was fired on by Israeli warplanes and ships off the Egyptian coast. Ten Americans died and 75 were wounded with 15 in critical condition. The ship, a lightly armed technical relay vessel, was aiding communications for U S posts in the Middle East. Israel apologized saying the attack was in error and the U S protested formally through Secretary of State Dean Rusk.
Congressman J Irving Whalley argues crime in the United States surged 46 percent from 1960 to 1965 despite population growth. He cites FBI data and 18 city comparisons to challenge the idea that urban crime tracks urban population, and criticizes courts for lax punishment and widespread loopholes.
Navy jets blasted a secret base 50 miles southwest of Hanoi destroying nine missile carriers and a radar van. Phantoms Skyhawks and Intru ders from Enterprise attacked with bombs and rockets while pilots reported fires and 5,000 foot smoke plumes. In a second strike, Constellation aircraft hit Kep Airfield northeast of Hanoi destroying one jet and damaging four. Marine forces near Khe Sanh fought a hot engagement leaving 18 Americans dead and 27 wounded. 63 Vietcong killed, 33 guerrillas killed and five captured in Mekong delta actions. Overall U.S. weekly casualties were 214 killed, 1,161 wounded, one missing.
Somerset County 4-H member James Kretchman of Meyersdale is named to the Leadership Council for 4-H Club Congress at Penn State University June 19 22. 60 delegates were chosen from 45 000 members for leadership and achievement.
A large turnout is planned for the 48th Grand Scratch Convention of the Military Order of Cooties in Somerset. Events include hospital visits, memorial services, parades, and a banquet with officers nominated and elected.
King Hussein of Jordan warned that the country has suffered tremendous losses due to Israel's air superiority amid a three day war and a fragile cease-fire. He said Iraqi troops and Jordanian forces are complying with the U.N. Security Council cease-fire resolution and warned of renewed hostilities if the enemy resumes fighting.
