Madrid officials raided the apartment of a former German resident now in Paris and seized documents they say show a prewar Nazi propaganda network active in Spain. Two Spaniards were arrested, one with a letter from Jose Primo de Rivera. The city suffered renewed bombardment with casualties and lights ordered out at 9 pm.
Two warships navigated without lights and fired over 20 rounds at Ceuta, the insurgent port in Spanish Morocco, after targets near shore batteries at Ceuta and Cameron Point were illuminated. The vessels could not be identified. authorities assumed they were Spanish government warships.
Johnstown June 8. National vice presidents H M Van Sant and C W Jones warned Bethlehem Steel owned Conemaugh and Blacklick Railroad workers would strike at midnight Thursday unless a written contract is signed. The 10 mile line near Bethlehem plants in Johnstown employs about 570 workers across Franklin Lower Gautier and Wire Mill facilities. The vote on strike was overwhelmingly in favor per a member poll. mediation board had certified the unions as bargaining agents last April.
Uniontown mourns as two school board leaders die within 24 hours. Mc Clellan Leonard, 73, treasurer, died after surgery. C. W. Weintge, 48, newly elected president, died in England from injuries sustained in an accident. Mrs Weintge learned of his death via radiogram from England.
Harrisburg June 8 The Secretary of Revenue John B Kelly reports that emergency taxes in the last biennium ending May 31 brought in $134,013,582 with May collections of $16,491,717. The breakdown covers gross receipts, capital stock, loans, corporate net income, cigarette, gasoline, amusements, escheats, personal property, distillers, inheritance, shares tax and liquor.
The court house offices will close at noon Wednesday and stay closed until Thursday morning to allow officials and clerks to attend the funeral of George L Longridge county treasurer. Longridge died early Monday from a heart attack after a county commissioners meeting. A 3 30 pm Wednesday gathering at the court house precedes a 4 pm funeral at Grace Evangelical church with Rev Dr Herman W Kaebnick officiating and interment in Husé Band cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs Mabel McKinley Baer were held at her North Edgewood residence. Rev Dr George L Roth led an Episcopal service with the St Pauls Reformed Church choir singing hymns and readings from The Choir Invisible by George Eliot. Pall bearers included choir members Raymond O Cook, William E Griffith, William Binford, Owen Beckley and others from Somerset and Rockwood. Interment was in Union Cemetery.
Carlisle June 8 William B Carroll 17 who would have graduated Thursday from Carlisle high school suffered fatal injuries tonight in an automobile crash. The car driven by George Bosler went out of control on a curve and rolled over as a group of classmates returned from a swimming party. Carroll died an hour later with other occupants escaping with minor injuries.
Judge Howard W. Hughes ordered a liquor sales ban in West Charleroi Dunlevy Monessen Roscoe Elco and Alle nport during a June 8 steelworkers election at Allenport and Monessen plants. About 5800 Pittsburgh Steel Co employees will vote on whether the Steel Workers Organizing Committee affiliate of the CIO should be their sole collective bargaining agent.
Atlanta June 8 A 5000 vote lead for repeal of Georgia prohibition law was shown on returns from 415 precincts in 108 of 159 counties. For repeal 27052 against repeal 21908. Returns from 218 precincts showed trend for adoption of 26 constitutional amendments sponsored by Governor E D Rivers.
Pittsburgh June 8 A state policeman denied that Fayette County District Attorney James A. Reilly ordered him to rough up Frank C. Monaghan in connection with a murder trial. Trooper Stacy Gunderman testified Reilly and others left Monaghan in a Bertillon room with exonerated officials, and described Monaghan being fingerprinted before an attack that Gunderman said he carried out after Monaghan allegedly struck him first.
In Pittsburgh on June 8 the AFL Canning and Pickle Workers Union won the vote to represent all over 2,000 workers at H J Heinz main plant. Ernest Dunbar of the labor board announced 1079 ballots for the union and 803 for the Heinz Employer Association. Heinz plans to reopen after certification of the result.
An accident on Route 30 at 2 25 Tuesday afternoon caused 125 damage with no injuries. Westbound driver John W Hantz of Ligonier a coach, collided with a sedan driven by 75 year old Owen Derflinger of Boswell as Derflinger left the Boswell road into the Lincoln highway. Patrolmen from Jennertown reported the incident.
Newark June 8 Bernard MacFadden publisher and physical culturist won custody of his two sons Berwyn 13 and Brewster 12 in a Chancery Court settlement with his estranged wife Mary Williamson MacFadden Englewood. The court awarded custody until the boys return to military school next fall amid charges Mrs MacFadden violated a prior custody agreement.
In Philadelphia on June 8 a pituitary tumor was removed from 20 year old Sue de Crescenzo of Scranton to halt her abnormal growth and improve eyesight. Doctors at Hahnemann Hospital report her sight has already improved and expect her to return home within a week. The operation aims to stop further growth by removing the glandular tumor.
Clarence Settle a 17 year old Cumberland parochial school boy will face two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault and battery by car after a Monday morning crash on Route 219 near Boynton. Mrs Luenda Fresh a 63 year old mother and her 21 year old son died at Hazel McGilvery hospital Meyersdale. Brean Fresh driver of the car died at the scene. David Fresh 71 escaped serious injury. Settle and three companions posted 500 bond each awaiting authorities. The six were part of a Pine Grove camp parochial school picnic group when the accident occurred. District Attorney A M Matthews said Settle to be held on at least 2000 bond after hospital release. The driver is hospitalized with facial lacerations and possible rib fractures.
Meyersdale volunteers kick off a week of fun on Large street show grounds with E S Corey Shows as headliner. A Thursday 5 30 parade features local bands and 30 Somerset and Maryland town fire departments. The Salis bury CCC drum corps will perform. The department added a 500 gallon pumper booster truck and remodeled pumpers. New gear includes steel helmets and sirens. Plans for the Western Pennsylvania firemen’s convention in Meyersdale in August expect 125 volunteer companies. Chief James Campbell presides, Deputy Sheriff S D Cramer leads Meyersdale unit.
In Roanoke on June 8 Senator Byrd D Virginia condemned what he called absurd extravagance in federal spending saying the only way to stop spending is to stop writing checks. He argued financial liquidity underpins progress and that the government must obtain funds via taxes borrowing or inflation while noting taxpayers and consumers will bear the burden.
Youngstown area reports a surge in strikes as Philip Murray calls for a Senate inquiry into the campaign. Republic Steel insists on mailing food into besieged plants while police warn pickets to drop clubs. Gov Davey signals possible mediation break with talks continuing with Republic Steel Inland Steel and Youngstown Sheet and Tube. 73000 idle workers mark the second week of labor action and a Memorial Day riot aftermath spurs legal action over mail delivery and cross state gunmen.
The June session of the Somerset County Banker's Association met Tuesday at the White Star hotel in Jennertown. T. O. Harris and William G. Humes of Mellon National Bank introduced speaker Stafford K. Colby of Aluminum Company of America Pittsburgh who spoke on the history and development of aluminum.Entertainment by Joseph Sheriff and Arthur Petterson of Winder accompanied the event. Nineteen county banks were represented with 128 attendees.
Los Angeles June 8. Jean Arthur, blond film star, says Columbia Pictures forced her into undesirable roles and she considers quitting film to pursue stage and radio. Arthur missed court due to illness while husband Frank Ross cites a nervous ailment but not serious. The studio contends she must perform under notice.
A six year old boy named Robert Kozak was killed in an automobile incident in Washington Pennsylvania on June 6. Police reported the tragedy but details about the vehicle and circumstances were not immediately available.
United States Judge Robert A. Cooper escaped injury when 12 to 15 shots were fired at him as he drove home in San Juan Puerto Rico. The eight Puerto Rican nationalists, including Pedro Albizu Campos, were flown to the United States to begin sentences ranging from four to ten years for conspiring to overthrow the government.
A gray Packard sedan owned by John Quint of Greensburg was reported stolen from Idlewild Park on Route 30 between Ligonier and Greensburg at 7:30 p m Tuesday. Somerset and Jennertown patrolmen said the license plate 70089. Police conducted a late night search for the vehicle.
Dan Rosbaugh six year old son of Mr and Mrs Blake Rosbaugh of 238 East Race street Somerset underwent a tonsillectomy in the hospital on Tuesday.
Monroe mayor Daniel Knaggs asked civilians with military experience to enlist as special policemen to help reopen Newton Steel Co after a ten day strike. CIO leaders oppose local referenda. governor urges peace talks. The plant employs 1322 workers and reopening was moved to Thursday morning.
Lansing workers on a second labor holiday halted building, industrial, and commercial activity. AFL affiliates and the United Auto Workers staged demonstrations, walking off jobs to protest arrests of eight pickets and to pressure for industrial or ganization. Officials say the stoppage ties up city and state projects and private work. cost estimates are sought as the protest continues.
The nation faced a prolonged steel strike as East St. Louis stockyards froze, Budd Wheel and Ternstedt plants shut, and over 15,000 workers were affected. Union leaders urged Senate probes while companies sought food shipments through postal routes. Monroe Michigan saw renewed walkouts, and courtroom actions followed across Illinois.
