President Eisenhower returned from an overnight seagoing inspection off Florida and witnessed a dramatic air sea rescue near the Saratoga task force. One navy pilot was found dead, the other Cmdr. J E Tefft was rescued by helicopter and taken to the carrier Valley Forge. Eisenhower sent condolences and prayers.
