NEW YORK The 33 member executive board of the Steelworkers union was summoned to a meeting Thursday to discuss a stalled wage contract. With the contract expiring June 30 negotiations have reached the halfway point since starting May 5. President David J. McDonald noted uncertainty whether the wage policy committee would be convened. The two sides ended a long bargaining session with little progress and a strike could slash U.S. steel output by about 90 percent unless an agreement is reached. The union seeks a substantial wage increase while officials argue gains can come from profits and productivity without raising prices.
