Poll Shows Confusion On Where Candidates Stand

AP poll in May shows more than half of Americans are unsure where major candidates stand on five issues including abortion welfare and military spending. Voters rely on candidate personal qualities over issue positions, with Udall Reagan and Jackson supporters more often correct about stands than Carter or Ford backers.

Carter Sees Chance of Second Ballot Win at Democratic Nominating

Democratic front runner Jimmy Carter said in Los Angeles he is confident of a second ballot victory at the party convention, while still aiming for a first ballot win. The primary race shifts to Ohio New Jersey and California with Church Brown and Udall making campaign appearances. Carter leads with about 903 delegates. Church 65. Brown 22.5. nomination needs 1505. Youthpower Opens Summer Jobs Program in Somerset

G Edward Bowersox announces Youthpower resumes operations this summer starting June 14 with Gary Williams as coordinator. Youth ages 14 to 21 seek part time or full time work, wages set by youths and employers, state minimum wage only on interstate work. Office at 248 West Main Street urges registrations. last year Somerset office ranked top nationwide and filled 200 percent of jobs.

Hays Expected To Leave House Post

Washington AP Rep Wayne Hays may resign Thursday as chair of the House Democratic Campaign Committee amid a payroll sex scandal probe. Elizabeth Ray denied telling federal agents she taped bedroom intimacy with 13 congressmen and two senators. The ethics committee opened an immediate inquiry and the Justice Department and a grand jury are examining possible use of public funds.

Meyersdale Sets 2.1 Million Budget For 1976 77

Meyersdale Area School Board tentatively approves a 2.1 million dollar budget for 1976 77 with final action slated for June 23. Major costs include 951 300 for instruction and 302 766 for debt service. The board plans roof and driveway work, seeks an 8 000 federal grant for a career education program, and considers delinquent tax collection options.

Penelec Rate Hike Approved in Pennsylvania

The Public Utility Commission approved a 14.9 million dollar annual rate increase for Pennsylvania Electric Co retroactive to July 10. The 3-2 vote raises the average bill about 1.20 monthly and is part of a 69 million dollar request. The utility serves 472,000 customers across 33 counties including Somerset. Commissioners O Bannon Bloom and Kelly voted for the measure.

Assembly plan funds rail links to Pittsburgh plant

A three bill package in the House would fund $26.9 million for rail and highway connections to a new assembly plant near Pittsburgh and allocate $10 million to PIDA to launch a $40 million plan to acquire a shuttered Chrysser Corp. plant at New Stanton. Courting VW: New Stanton locals woo VW for first American plant

A Volkswagen supplier official suggested renaming New Stanton to New Wolfsburg to reflect the area’s kinship with the German city. VW favors New Stanton for its first U S auto plant aiming to produce Rabbits by fall 1977.
