Western Berlin faced a food and essential goods cutoff from the Russian sector as the three Western powers protested Moscow’s actions. France disclosed British evidence of a Russian plot to push them from Berlin while Russia accused the U S of flying rule violations amid ongoing crisis.
In Philadelphia the Democratic platform writers debate pledging repeal of the Taft Hartley act. AFL CIO leaders push for repeal while some Democrats fear political backlash. Delegates include CIO president Philip Murray and PAC chief Jack Kroll as hearings begin on the farm and labor planks.
Independence Day events in Windber drew several thousand attendees. A major parade featured county fire companies and bands. Prizes totaling more than 3400 were awarded to Conemaugh, New Florence, Boswell, Meyersdale, Upper Yoder, Everett, Berlin, Richland township, and Windber Legion Girls for various categories.

In Pittsburgh July 6 a testing contract dispute left 40,000 coal miners in steel pits and 45,000 in West Virginia and western Pennsylvania idle. Five states report widespread shutdowns as steel firms fear reduced production. Western Pennsylvania and U S Steel cut output and banked blast furnaces while 78,000 eastern Pennsylvania anthracite miners returned after vacation with a new contract.
Edison, former Navy secretary under Roosevelt and ex Democratic governor of New Jersey, says he will vote for Republican Thomas Dewey. He calls for a national housecleaning and a complete change of management, urging use of the two party system to implement it.
Somerset volunteers responded to Harold Gates home on Cannell Drive after a noon Tuesday lightning strike. Fire chief Barnhart said the bolt followed wiring to a bedroom switch, causing about $500 damage, $400 of it to Mrs. Gates’ clothing. The brick house, owned by Charles Alexander and rented to the Gates, was insured.
A 76 year old Smethport man named John Doty is in fair condition at Franklin hospital after being struck by a car two miles west of Franklin. He sustained a fractured leg and a head injury.
The intensive five day search for 23 month old Donnie Collier who disappeared from the Laurel Hill cabin of William Rummel in Jeannette continues with 95 miners from UMWA Local No. 6 aiding in the woods. State police say footprints found Monday are not the child's and officers believe he is outside a 1000 foot radius. Miners slogged through rain drenched terrain, seeking any clue as to the tot's whereabouts.
Dr. Paul Shogren and his wife Gertrude escaped injury when a bolt ripped through their Laurel Hill creek cabin near Trent last Saturday night. The strike shattered a kitchen cabinet, ignited a five foot oak tree, which burned for two hours before toppling into Laurel Hill creek. A neighboring cabin saw a copper radio aerial burn out, but the radio survived and the house was spared.
A sudden downpour Tuesday around 1 45 p m dumped more than an inch and a half of rain over about 30 minutes. David Grove says 1 58 inches fell officially as thunder and lightning accompanied the heavy storm until sun returned and skies cleared.
Paris reports a Moscow inspired scheme to drive the United States France and Britain from Berlin. A secret German Communist central committee document outlined steps including riots and a Russian army intervention to protect western occupation forces. Western officials dismissed the plan as a hoax and noted it had circulated since last November.

Ray Kooser of Rockwood was arrested for reckless driving after driving a tractor and trailer on Fast Main street. Pvt. Daniel Fodor filed the information before Squire H. S. Whipperman. Kooser paid a $15 fine plus costs and was released.
The Israeli government rejected Count Folke Bernadotte's Palestine peace proposals and he said he would continue talks if fighting resumes. Bernadotte planned to extend the four week truce. Israeli and Arab leaders weigh borders and Jerusalem demilitarization under UN guard.
Sam D. Conn of Edie faces a liquor without license charge filed by S M Adams of the Pennsylvania liquor control board. Adams bought liquor and beer at Conn general store in Edie on Sunday June 27. Conn waived a hearing and will appear before the court.
Sylvester W. MacDonald aged 51 of Brazil Indiana was killed when his car went off the highway and crashed into a stream bank two miles south of Cochranton Meadvill reports the fatal crash occurred today.
Heavy fighting blocks the Tel Aviv Haifa highway as Arab forces clash with Jewish troops near Carmel. U N TRUCE team trucks were fired on. two US Marines report taking cover as bullets raked the road between Tireh and Jara.
Three people were hospitalized after a Tuesday evening crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike two miles west of the Somerset interchange. Seymour Travers of New York City, Morris Hurtrvitz of Hollywood California, and Beatrice Hurtrvitz suffered facial, hand, chest, and limb injuries when their car left the roadway, rolled, and landed in a field. Police reported the victims in fair condition.
The United States Britain and France demand Moscow lift the Berlin blockade and begin a direct approach. Marshall delays a hospital exam to handle the crisis as notes are sent to Moscow while Bonnets Bonnet and Franks join Belgian Dutch and Canadian envoys at the State Department.
West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania see partly to mostly cloudy skies with cooler Wednesday and Thursday fair conditions. Eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland report cooler Wednesday and Thursday with moderate temperatures, while temperatures trend two to three degrees above normal. Scattered thunder showers bring about one quarter inch precipitation in most areas, with heavier rain possible in southern portions.
