An Associated Press survey finds some major retailers stocking fewer brands and sizes with bare spots in produce but no nationwide shortages. Officials warn of potential issues if the price freeze extends beyond the 60 days announced by President Nixon, while Cost of Living Council head John Dunlop aims to lift controls soon.
Former Pennsylvania Congressman J Irving Whalley was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts including mail fraud and obstructing justice. The scheme allegedly ran from 1963 to 1973 involving kickbacks from staff salaries to Whalley and relatives on his payroll.
President Nixon will meet Huang Chen China’s top U S envoy Friday at the Western White House to press for a Cambodia peace settlement. Kissinger will join for talks ahead of a Peking mission with Premier Chou En Lai in late summer. Sihanouk denied word of Cambodia talks with him during the Peking visit.

Harrisburg report shows runaway feed prices wrecking Pennsylvania dairy industry with 3000 farms closed since June 1972, a 14 percent drop from the prior year. McHale cites grain prices rising after the Soviet grain deal and sharp climbs in dairy ration and soybean costs.
In Harrisburg Democratic negotiators proposed a revised tax cut package similar to a 210 million plan as welfare officials sought federal food stamps and relief funds due to the budget impasse. Over 100000 welfare checks were delayed, 400000 people expected affected, with emergency loans issued to 30000 recipients in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.
Former White House aide Egil Krogh Jr. invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to testify before a Los Angeles grand jury examining the Sept. 1971 break in at Dr. Lewis Fielding’s Beverly Hills office. Krogh met briefly with reporters, declined comment, and said earlier statements have been interpreted in various ways. The district attorney indicated potential indictments for conspiracy may be warranted, though he did not name subjects, and the panel will resume Sept. 4 after obtaining documents from Watergate investigators.
