Fighting rages along South Vietnam's northern front near the DMZ with North Vietnam launching rocket and mortar bombardments and ground assaults. U S air forces reply with B52 raids and artillery as Saigon plans to shift defense of the last American held sector to South Vietnamese troops within two weeks.
Top secret Pentagon papers were disclosed early showing high level talk of using nuclear weapons in Vietnam if escalation triggered a major Chinese attack. Dean Rusk told Saigon that escalation could bring nuclear arms. Gravel faced legal questions for leaking documents. The Supreme Court allowed NYT and Washington Post to publish stories based on the study.
President Nixon praised Turkey for stopping opium poppy cultivation as a key step in the world narcotics fight. Turkey will end poppy growing by July 1972 with only four provinces growing a final crop this fall, as the U S promises aid to shift farmers to other crops. Secretary Rogers said negotiations continue with six other poppy countries and at UN to curb illegal narcotics.
The Pennsylvania legislature approved emergency stopgap funding of 261 million dollars to run state operations for 30 days and a Sunday liquor sales bill. The Senate passed the liquor bill 27 to 18 after debate, with a 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. sale window and food sale requirements. Both measures go to Gov. Shapp, who was expected to sign.
A Harrisburg report for the 1971 White House Conference on Aging shows Somerset County with 9,239 residents aged 65 and over in 1970, or 12.2 percent of the population, above the statewide 10.8 percent. Over ten years, 1960 to 1970, Somerset’s 65 plus group rose 3.2 percent, while Pennsylvania’s growth averaged 12.7 percent. Among 45 plus residents, total in Somerset reached 2 640 for ages 45 to 64 totaling 18 401. Decreases in 65 and over occurred in Bradford Greene Porter Venango and Warren counties.
Edgar Elliott Augustine of Addison, longtime project head in the 1930s, received a plaque as the first honorary member of the Somerset County Archaeology Society. The effort, aided by John I. Scull, Mrs. Frank Black, and Dr. Donald A. Cadzow, uncovered Monongahela Phase sites like Montague, Clouse, and Hanna near Fort Hill and Ursina, with WPA funding and PA Historical Commission support.
