In Harrisburg, lawmakers and Gov. Shafer press talks to fix a pension inequity dating to 1955. They seek a ceiling on leadership pensions and a plan based on the best five years of salary to align retirements with tenure and current high salaries. The proposal may reset eligibility to six years of service for full or partial pensions.
The Somerset Daily American will not publish on Independence Day July 4 and will not work on July 3. The editorial staff will resume at 3 p.m. on July 4, and the business office remains closed all day July 4.
Harrisburg AP Gov. Shafer said he would give serious thought to a possible vice presidential bid if offered by the GOP nominee. He rejected becoming Nelson Rockefeller's running mate and urged a court test of Pennsylvania's new aid to nonpublic schools while defending the law as aiding students. He backs a bill requiring a State Police permit to own a gun, arguing it could prevent crime and noting public support for stricter controls.

U S Green Berets and South Vietnamese irregulars overran a Viet Cong defense unit and captured a large weapons cache near Saigon, including 172 carbines 95 machine guns 75 AK47s 20 tons of TNT and thousands of rounds and mortars. Eleven other caches and a parallel clash left dozens dead or wounded. The Buddhist leader Thich Tri Quang was released.

Under a new law signed by the Governor Somerset County can automatically fill sheriff or coroner vacancies. The chief deputy sheriff and chief deputy coroner gain authority to assume the sheriff or coroner role if a vacancy arises, replacing the prior rule that the sheriff would fill in if the coroner was removed or died before term end.
A Citizens Permanent Conference on the Potomac River Basin petitions the Corps of Engineers to hold further hearings on six dams planned for the Potomac Basin. They allege deficient data and ignored public testimony from a Winchester hearing. Dams named Verona Virginia Town Creek Sideling Hill Sixes Bridge Little Cacapon North Mountain.
The State Public School Building Authority announced bids were received in Harrisburg on June 27 for a Rockwood Area School District addition. The single story brick wing will house three regular classrooms, a typing and business classroom, a music classroom, and an auditorium with a total pupil capacity of 710.
