The Senate unanimously approved a four year extension of broad presidential powers for responding to any nuclear attack or threat. The House had already passed the bill, with only two senators on the floor. The move follows ongoing wartime debates and calls for a renewed U.S. peace effort amid North Vietnam air actions.
Judge Lansberry orders the Somerset courthouse bell rung 50 times at 2 p.m. July 4 1966 to mark Independence Day with civic groups urged to join in the joyous sound of freedom.
Hospitals across the country brace for the July 1 start of Medicare. President Johnson says the program tests Americans as elderly citizens flood 6 704 hospitals with 19 million eligible recipients. About 91 percent of general hospitals have cleared the Civil Rights Act requirement, enabling 95 percent of beds for Medicare patients. 669 hospitals remain barred.
The Coleman Co. of Wichita Kansas donates 30000 to Somerset County industrial fund for a 2.3 million plant north of the county. Ray L. Morrison says the gift helps push the drive toward 155000 and praises local cooperation. A committee will contact further potential donors as the honor roll is published Friday. Plant plans include 650 jobs and a 3 million dollar annual payroll.
Mrs Marie Speicher of Somerset received the Valley Forge Teachers Medal and plaque at a Wednesday ceremony at Union Street School. A Friedens Elementary first grade teacher with 27 years experience, she is Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate and active in the First Christian Church.
US jets struck three fuel depots north of Hanoi in a new drive to cut oil for North Vietnam. Navy fliers from the carrier Constellation also reported destroying radar vans and buildings at Kep. American ground forces killed about 300 soldiers of a Communist regiment 50 miles north of Saigon as the offensive intensified.
President De Gaulle and Soviet leaders urge end to foreign intervention in Viet Nam in a joint 2000 word declaration. Kosygin condemns US bombings near Haiphong and Hanoi as a senseless step. The visit yields trust in Europe but no new security conference plan.
Forty two county 4-H members depart Rockwood for an exchange visit to ranches and farms in western Colorado. They travel by train to Chicago and Denver, then Grand Junction for a two week itinerary including jeep tours, farm tours, a buffalo view, and visits to the Air Force Academy and Pike's Peak area. The group returns to Rockwood July 14, acting as traveling ambassadors for Somerset County.
Laurel Highlands Inc received a $1000 first prize from the state for outstanding promotional work over two years. Presentations were made at the annual Laurel Highlands dinner in Green Gables, with other contributions from West Penn Power, Laurel Highlands Telephone, and Citizens Telephone. Wayne Pile and past presidents accepted the checks as Shoemaker highlighted the contest’s goal to boost Pennsylvania economies and local leadership.
Mostly sunny weather hits western Pennsylvania with high temperatures 85 to 92 Friday. Saturday should bring little change in temperatures as heat persists through the weekend.
