Mike Kasperak underwent a single heart transplant at Stanford conducted by Dr. Norman E. Shumway. The donor was Virginia White, who died of a stroke two hours earlier. Kasperak, 54, weighs 144 pounds and is conscious but nonverbal, with a tube in his throat. The operation began at 5 p.m. and ended about 9:30 p.m., marking the fourth human heart transplant in history. The team cautions that the case remains fragile with weeks of observation ahead to prevent rejection.
