Somerset county records the second auto pedestrian fatality of the year as 71 year old William Sipple of Meyersdale R D 1 dies on the Salisbury St Paul road after being struck by a car driven by Alva J Nicholson. The driver claimed he did not see the pedestrian in time to avoid the crash. Officials say no prosecution is planned. Funeral arrangements are set for Tuesday in St Paul. The incident follows another fatal auto pedestrian crash on Route 53 in Hooversville New Year’s Day.

Greensburg Jan 5 Con stable Joseph Sabers says he wounded Paul Varholla 37 of near Scottdale Westmoreland county after Varholla resisted arrest during a five mile car flight with a woman companion. Varholla shot in stomach taken to Mt Pleasant hospital after roadside scuffle.

Blizzard Spreads 3 Victim Injuries On Somerset Turnpike
A Saturday blizzard caused two auto crashes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Somerset County. Three people were treated at Somerset Community Hospital including William L. Donner a 19 year old student from Sharpsburg with facial burns and other injuries. Dr. Clayton L Alexander of Mt. Lebanon and his 16 year old daughter Elaine were also injured when the car skid into an embankment near 16 miles east of the interchange. The accidents involved a snow plow operator Albert Copper and another driver from Washington Pa. Casualties were listed as non fatal and conditions varied from good to contusions and lacerations.

James Dinning a 64 year old Stoystown miner was critically injured around noon Saturday in Reading Coal and Iron company mines near Stoystown. His right hand was mangled with all but one finger amputated at Somerset Community hospital.

Nine motorists injured in north county ice crashes
Nine motorists were injured, some seriously, in three north county crashes from skidding on icy roads Saturday. John Scurck 22 of Cairnbrook skidded into H B Lehman 49 of Rockingham, gravely injuring Mrs Lehman. Scurck uninjured. Charles Lynch Mine 37 Windber and wife Mary 19 and Jack Lynch were injured in a second skid on Route 56. no prosecutions expected. Authorities cited illegal passing by an unnamed driver in the bus crash.
