Two Altoona men Mark Geddes 22 and Charles Kinsley 20 were captured in Florida by the Florida Highway Patrol and handed to the FBI for questioning in the killing of Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. John Valent. The arrests followed their abandonment of a stolen 1966 sedan and a tip from a citizen. The car had been reported stolen December 12 in Fallen Timber Pennsylvania.
Governor Shapp named two public assistance recipients to the Northampton County welfare board. Lucretia Johnson of Easton and Carol Wilkens, previously on welfare, join a seven member board as part of local decision making. More appointments statewide were in process with potential further names.
U S and South Vietnamese ground forces observed a 24 hour New Year cease fire in South Vietnam while raids continued in North Vietnam and Laos. U S reconnaissance jets monitored damage from five days of bombing as B 52s and fighters hit near the Ho Chi Minh Trail. North Viet Nam claimed two downed Navy flyers and the U S Command reported two crewmen rescued and five missing. Three U S jets were lost to SAMs and a fourth reported to have crashed under unknown causes. Continuous violence flared around Koutum as Viet Cong attacked a highland village and disputed a three day cease fire.
Calcutta reports India begins a vast road and rail campaign to relocate nearly 10 million Bangladesh refugees. Officials expect 80 percent to return to native villages within two months, with Indira Gandhi optimistic the process could finish by February.
Somerset County will get a $93,533.62 refund from liquid fuels tax for the six months ended Dec 1, with a statewide total of $12.66 million. County commissioners will allocate funds for road and bridge construction and maintenance within the county, including bond retirement if applicable.
Rotary District Governor Thomas F. Lansbery honored L. Clayton Berkey as a Paul Harris Fellow at Somerset Rotary Club with a plaque and badge accepted by his son Earl on his 81st birthday. Berkey, a Rotarian since 1925 and former club president, had diverse ventures from deputy sheriff at 21 to coal, Berkey Block Plant, H. W. Walker company, and cattle farming with 400 head.
William Stader of Somerset bor ough is the hero of the week for tending stray animals and refurbishing old No 13 locomotive with Bedford County Railway Historical Society. He teaches Seabee reservists monthly in Cumberland Md and plans retirement March 12. His leisure includes an electric organ and his own pets, notably stray beagle pups and a miniature collie rescued by the city desk.
