Thwarting the influence of 60 American families, President Roosevelt’s critics warn of plutocracy as Ickes accuses big business of blocking reform. The speech denounces corporate power and labor-board actions while urging regulation to protect the public.
Republican Senator Charles McNary said Roosevelt administration attacks on big business worsen the recession by sowing fear and undermining confidence. He cited Robert H Jackson’s speeches as intensifying distrust and urged enforcement of existing anti monopoly laws. Senator Barkley warned Congress would tackle monopolies at opening session. Lewis W. Douglas lamented the broken covenant of 1932.
Secretary Ickes and Assistant Attorney General Jackson argue private capital and a $60 family controlled recession stem from a sit down strike and monopoly pricing. They urge enforcement of laws and a congressional probe, signaling a tough presidential stance on business in the coming session.

Ralph Scalis 27, Pitt graduate, held without bail after his father Erie detective sergeant Louis Scalise 51 was shot five times in his home. Police say motive stemmed from long standing conflict as Scalise claimed he emptied the gun during a struggle for the weapon.
After twenty tites of deliberation in the grand jury room the coroner’s jury exonerated Daniel Pittsburgh of the death of Homer G. King who was struck by a car driven by Smarsh. The jurors urged further state inquiry into Smarsh’s ability to operate a vehicle in icy conditions near Route 53 south of Somerset.
