George a 21 year old Grantsville Maryland man who had been a fugitive from justice since mid summer was arrested Sunday in Baltimore where he worked in a steel mill Deputy Sheriff Howard A Baldwin brought him to Somerset and he was committed to the county jail on a serious morality charge He furnished bond Monday morning and was released pending action of the January grand jury
New York December 29 Bert Acosta 48 veteran trans Atlantic flyer was admitted to Bellevue hospital with lobar pneumonia.
Sgt. Edward C. Janeski, 27, Somerset County’s first service member killed in the Far East hostilities, died in action in the Philippines. A Panama Canal Zone veteran, he joined the army seven years ago and is survived by his widow, parents, and several siblings. He was born July 30, 1914, and had lived in Jenners and Boswell before moving to Somerset.
Montown December 29. The Casserly brothers Clyde 20 wounded at Pearl Harbor and William 22 Theodore 24 Jacob sergeant in the army pledge to avenge him. Theodore Navy William Air Corps enlist to see action. Father William Casserly Sr veteran Spanish-American War works in a coal mine. Two younger brothers remain at home.
SHARON December 29 One man is dead and another hurt after a car fleeing state motor police collided with a second car at a Sharon street intersection. The dead man was identified as Karl Katzler of Cleveland and the injured as Ralph Eugene Lohr of Milwaukee. Both were wanted for questioning in a $25 filling station robbery at Camp Perry. John Knupp of Indiana drove the other car and escaped injury.
The 1,300 depositors of the closed First National Bank of Boswell will receive final dividend disbursements within days. The last payment amounts to 4.45 percent, yielding about 55 percent recovery. Receipts were mailed, and depositors are asked to sign and return receipts and receivers' certificates promptly before records are burned per law.
Three men charged with terroristic dynamiting of construction machinery on the Pennsylvania turnpike in 1939 were sentenced today. Albert L. Russell, once a labor leader in Johnstown, drew 2 1/4 to five years in the penitentiary after being found an accessory to malicious mischief by explosion and posted $5,000 bond for appeal. Wille Cook of Johnstown received a 2 1/4 to five year penitentiary term, while David Wise of Lorain, Ohio, got 10 months in jail. Cook and Wise implicated Russell and testified he arranged the dynamiting for the Girard Construction Co during labor disputes. Russell claimed Nick Stirone of Pittsburgh ordered the act and urged killings.
An authorized source says Vichy France will not negotiate over St Pierre and Miquelon and seeks immediate sovereignty. The islands were occupied by Free French forces just before Christmas, a move US State Department called arbitrary. Government circles say there is nothing to negotiate and await State Department actions to restore the status quo.

Italian divisions suffered heavy casualties while Russian forces reclaimed 106 villages in six days.
New York shipyard reports 19 survivors from the Sagadahoc after it was torpedoed on December 3 en route to South Africa. Chief Officer Norris Chadbourne said seven and a half days in a lifeboat yielded the men, with 16 more sailors and Captain Evans reaching South Africa separately. One casualty, Anthony Castro, likely died in the explosion. The freighter, hit at dusk, sank 20 minutes after capsizing. lifeboats stayed together then separated. Sagadahoc sailed from New York on November 7.
RAF pounded Wilhelmshaven, Ems canal, Huls and other targets across western Germany and occupied Europe in a major night of raids. Eight German ships totaling 15,650 tons were sunk and RAF commandos struck Vaagso Maaloy islands, killing many and taking prisoners. The Maaloy garrison was destroyed or captured as the joint land sea and air operation proceeded in coordination from Norway to the Netherlands.
Dutch army air force resumes the Indies toll on Japanese shipping with a direct hit on a transport off the harbor of Mir i Sarawak. Aneta said no confirmation of Manila reports that 12 more Japanese troopships were sunk off Davao. The communique credited American built Martin bombers for shooting down two Japanese fighters. It also described the Medan airbase attack with 30 killed, 70 wounded, and significant damage, while parachute troops reports remained unconfirmed.
Washington report describes a three hour Japanese air assault on Manila Bay defenses including Fort Mills Corregidor Fort Drum Fort Hughes. American subs sank two Japanese ships while anti aircraft fire downed four bombers. volunteers claimed several air victories in Burma and China.
