In quake wrecked Anatolia hundreds of thousands face death from hunger cold and disease as blizzards and blocked lines hinder relief. Officials warn more shocks may come. at least 30 000 injured with food and medical help hard to reach.
Miriam Solovieff 18 survives a night in which her mother Elizabeth 38 and sister Vivienne 14 died from knife or gun wounds. Their father Miriam Solovieff 41, an assistant cantor, shot his wife and daughter then killed himself after pleading for reconciliation. Police found a note promising revenge in his coat.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr and his wife Hijel Du Pont arrived at the White House after a car crash near Winchester Virginia. They sustained minor injuries and were assisted into the White House while the First Lady rushed to join them. Roosevelt Jr a University of Virginia law student had been returning from a Polish relief ball at the Gilpin country home near Boyce Virginia.
In a third circuit ruling Judge Francis Biddle voided a NLRB order against Swank Products Co of Atterboro Mississippi. The court held that an inside or company union can be legitimate if the company shows only a passive interest and does not discriminate against or oppose organized labor.
James M. Landis acting as a labor department examiner told Secretary Perkins that Harry Bridges is not a member or affiliated with the Communist party. Landis sent his finding with the deportation report but did not recommend Bridges be deported.
Harrisburg reports a proposed consolidation of four western Pennsylvania gas utilities into Manufacturers Light and Heat, to serve about 190,496 Pennsylvania customers. Hearings set for January 24 in Pittsburgh, with offices in Pittsburgh and ownership by Columbia Gas and Electric Corporation.
Two miners employed in an Allegheny tunnel on the Pennsylvania turnpike were reported resting fairly well in Community Hospital Friday evening after a rock fall caused injuries. Davie Beals, 23, of Berlin R. D. 3, and Joseph G. Dubowitz, 27, of Somerset, sustained lacerations and brush burns to the head and face and Dubowitz a back injury.
Mosquero New Mexico December 29 The Mosquero Monitor could not print on time as subzero temperatures froze the press Editor R E Moery said the back shop was unbearably cold forcing workers to wear coats overshoes mufflers and mittens They disassembled the press and heated it piece by piece over an open fire to finish the edition on schedule.
In Court Room No 1 Judge Norman T Boose will swear in twelve men and one woman as Somerset County officials for a Monday start. All pledge to defend the U S and Pennsylvania constitutions. Boose then takes a new oath administered by Prothonotary Mack. Jo will begin a ten year term as president judge of the Somerset County courts.
Prof John Snyder recalled a year in Baghdad during a Somerset Rotary luncheon at Ferner hotel. He described route from Damascus to Baghdad, desert dangers, climate with 130 degree summers, and wells along the way. He recounted a Sheik’s home dinner and a visit to a mosque area where non Muslims were barred.
P J McCabe 46 chief clerk at Edenborn mine died of streptococcus pneumonia after multiple transfusions sought through a Washington, DC donor who had recovered. Mrs Rose McMullin, who survived the disease, offered to donate. she was en route to Uniontown after stopping in Philadelphia. McCabe, a Clearfield County native, had 28 years with H C Frick. Widow and five children survive.
Harrisburg officials report Dr. Francis B. Haas is probing protests against the firing of Dr. John C. Johnson as head of the science department at West Chester State Teachers College.
Fisk Rubber Corp stockholders approve sale to a U S company for about 11.23 million dollars. The Wilmington vote ends the merger process and transfers control to the buyer.
DPA Executive Director Richard Krissinger reports 1,291 direct relief cases as of December 23, a 22-case drop from the prior week and the seventeenth consecutive weekly decline from the 1939 peak. Work relief participants fall to 141. two junior visitors furloughed as relief demand eases. county board holds routine session with no new projects.
In Williamsport a custody suit over Ellen Ethel Arlow ends with her foster mother Mrs. Ira Reynolds retaining custody until a physician approves removal. Judge Mortimer C. Rhone orders the child not to leave Reynolds's care and requires immigration approval and repayment for expenses. Ellen Ethel and her twin Bernard Arlow met recently at the hearing and exchanged gifts.
Funeral services for Henry L Doherty founder of Cities Service drew over two thousand people at St Bartholomew Episcopal church. Hundreds of Cities Service employees attended and police kept back a crowd outside. About 500 floral pieces filled the chancel and transepts. Honorary pallbearers included Merlin H Aylesworth Walter F Brown Kent Cooper B C Forbes Will Hays Daniel Hastings James Cox Owen D Young and George Teagle.
A fatal fire on the new turnpike site at Ameison in Chambersburg killed Samuel Moore 30 of Columbus Ohio and Kathryn Smith 19 of Grafton West Virginia. Five others escaped through a window as investigators say the blaze began in a cookstove.
London reports a Queen Elizabeth class battleship was torpedoed west of Scotland by a German submarine. Four missing, one seriously wounded. Admiralty says the vessel is safe and proceeding, with five ships in the class and Britain’s naval losses mounting to include Royal Oak and Courageous.
Finnish news agency recounts confusion and deadly Russian mistakes west of Kone, with five enemy tanks destroyed and 600 Russian dead at Kelja. Russian planes bomb Viipuri and rail junctions across southwestern Finland while entrenchment slows in Arctic Petsamo. Unconfirmed reports say Stalin accelerates the attack.
Moscow reports that Russia’s censorship of news dispatches to foreign countries starts today. The foreign office press department will run cables from 10 a m to 1 a m next day, EST, with telephone dispatches possibly forbidden to prevent releases deemed harmful to Russia’s defense or foreign relations.
Rio de Janeiro dispatch reports the Brazilian port city Oglobo claims a German freighter Bahia Blanca was captured last week by the British cruiser Shropshire. Confirmation from British or German embassies was not available.
Two young youths die in sled and automobile collisions as winter cold wave continues. Samuel Dillon, 13, from Latrobe, was injured last night in a collision with a moving car. Virginia Siket, 13, of McKeesport, dies from a crash with a parked vehicle.
Finnish ski scouts under General Kurt Martti Wallenius reportedly cut off 10,000 Russian troops from their base near the central Finland border and surrounded them northeast of Kemi arot. Dispatches praised calm troops and citizens as a Russian patrol was neutralized with minimal disruption.
Stockholm reports Sweden sending the fourth contingent of volunteers to Finland. Many senior officers resign commissions to serve. A Stockholm factory of 1100 workers voted to contribute a day’s pay and worked on a holiday with double wages to support Finland.

Dr. Thomas R. Fister, native of Lehigh County, began duties today as resident obstetrical surgeon at Coaldale State Hospital. He served as ship's doctor aboard the President Harding last October when 108 passengers were hospitalized during a three day storm.
Berlin reports Nazi spokesmen claim the German undersea fleet sunk or damaged four British capital ships west of Scotland. They say the battleship Queen Elizabeth class was torpedoed and another battleship may have been sunk at Scapa Flow on October 14.
