In Austin, President Johnson and Defense Secretary McNamara reviewed U.S. military needs with heavy Viet Nam emphasis. Final budget decisions were not disclosed, as the budget moves to Congress next month and may be extended for the economic report due January 20.
Somerset County receives 70,830.46 approved by the State Department of Revenue as its share of a 9.7 million statewide refund from liquid fuels tax collections for six months ending December 11. Funds must be used for county roads and bridges within county lines.
Congressman J. Trving Whalley will leave Walter Reed General Hospital today after gall bladder removal completed Friday. He had gall stones found in a January 1965 checkup, triggering the operation. the 1965 Congress was in session most of the year while he served on a Far East Committee Study Mission in Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, and India from November 7 to December 12. He remained at the hospital over Christmas and New Year to be ready for the January 10, 1966 session opening.
Reported after Friday fire, Trinity Lutheran Church shows remarkable survivals. An intact baptismal font, an American Flag still mounted, an almost pristine wall behind the altar, an undamaged old wooden pew, and choir robes hanging in smoke-stained closets remain. Crosses on the tower and altar stand, while Fire Chief Wilson and several firefighters escaped unharmed as the roof collapsed. A second smoldering fire at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday burned pews, with embers blamed for continued danger. Heavy water damage from firefighting drenched Sunday School rooms, and officials plan razing what remains to prevent hazards. The site is deemed unsafe and slated for quick clearance.

AP reports Amintore Fanfani offered resignation as foreign minister after controversy over Giorgio La Pira comments at a party. Premier Aldo Moro rejected the move while La Pira alleged peace talk remarks persisted. Hanoi denied overtures. La Pira defended his retelling amid political backlash.

In Lisbon a truck filled with coffins crashed into the Lopes family home at about 3 a.m. Maria Ferreira Lopes and relatives were rescued from the rubble by neighbors. The truck driver and his helper were uninjured.
Washington welcomed a new Communist pause in South Viet Nam attacks as Hanoi had yet to respond to a halt in U S air raids on the North now in its fifth day. State Department noted the South Viet regime would handle any reply while recalling prior New Year truces saw violations. U S sources downplayed the significance of the Viet Cong proposal, noting yearend lulls are common and suggesting Saigon may ease pace if it chooses. The Christmas truce began Friday amid ongoing air strikes on the North.
Alexander Shelepin, No. 2 Soviet Communist leader and former head of the secret police, will visit North Viet Nam with a delegation. The move signals Moscow’s bid for influence in Hanoi amid Sino-Soviet tensions and ongoing Vietnam War developments.
