Butler Department Store Devastated by Early Evening Fire
A spectacular blaze swept the W. J. Offutt Co. department store in downtown Butler for about 2% hours, causing $250,000 to $590,000 in damage. No injuries reported as flames rose 50 to 100 feet aided by high winds. The two story building started on the second floor and the fire damaged nearby shoe store and two theaters, crowds watched as crews fought the fire.

Sgt Stephens To Retire From Pennsylvania State Police
Sgt Howard A Stephens commandant of the Somerset state police sub station will retire Monday ending 20 years with the Pennsylvania state police. He joined February 12 1931 and has served at Jennerstown Somerset Greensburg Beaver Falls Butler Indiana and New Eagle. He is president of the Central Pennsylvania Police Officers Association and lives in Somerset with his wife and son James. Acting commandant will be Cpl Harry Anderson.

Somerset Lions club met at Pine Grill for dinner and a program featuring pictures from the Pittsburgh Lions International convention in 194? The show also included photos of Easter egg hunts in 1939 and 1941 at the Gilmour country home. Dwight Funk was honored with a birthday song. Jay Walker of the Berlin Lions attended as a guest. Dies Friday After Bus Crash at Route 31 West of Somerset
Richard Kifer Darr 42 of West Main Street died Friday at Somerset Community Hospital three days after the Route 31 bus crash west of Somerset. Sara Hoburn also died of injuries. bus driver Robert Flowers and Leona Mayhugh remain hospitalized. An inquest will be held after survivors recover. Darr, married with two daughters, was a bank examiner and church elder with ties to Bethany College and Sigma Nu. Funeral services are set for Monday at Harger Funeral Home.

The Bureau of Mines preliminarily blamed electricity for the Orient No. 2 coal mine explosion at West Frankfort Illinois that killed 119 of 257 workers. Investigators cited extensive electrical equipment in air returning from abandoned areas as a likely ignition source. Cigarettes or matches could also have sparked the blast. no blasting was occurring. A final report will follow after air and dust tests.

Lewis Blames Mine Management for West Frankfort Explosion
