On the USS Saipan a Greenland rescue succeeded as 12 airmen were saved by a C-47 equipped with skis and jet assist. The mercy mission carrier plans to reach Argentia before returning to Norfolk after January 1.
Twelve U S airmen stranded since December 9 on a 1800 foot Greenland ice cap were rescued in 38 minutes by a C 47 with jet assist. The plane landed at 9:30 am EST and took off with the men at 10:08 am. All are reported in good health near Blue West Eight base, Greenland.
A charter DC-3 carrying 27 passengers and three crew vanished on a San Juan to Miami flight after leaving Puerto Rico at 10 03 p m. Search efforts by air force navy coast guard covered Florida to Cuba and the Bahamas with one navy blimp on standby. The plane owned by Karl Knight of Miami but leased to Airborne Transport Inc. had two women aboard and was last heard near Kingston Jamaica and 50 miles south of Miami before going silent.
Two persons received minor injuries and a car was damaged about $700 in a Tuesday crash on Route 30 near Stoystown. Arch Weyant, Central City R D 1, westbound, collided with a left-turning vehicle driven by George N Gray, Indian Head R D 28, sending Weyant's car over an embankment and wrecking the guard rail.

In Lykens Pennsylvania on December 28, state police reported the double tragedy of Mrs. Alverta Begani a 39 year old strangled with silk stockings and her husband Michael Begani 47 hanged himself after jealousy. The wife was found in her apartment and Begani's body was found in a field by his brothers. A note by Begani directed his mother to handle his wristwatch and money. Both had prior marriages and divorces. He worked in a coal washery and she in a shirt factory.
Mrs. Wilma Ybarbo of Malden Massachusetts was found guilty of murdering her GI husband in Marburg Germany under both German and American occupation law. The 23 year old mother faces a 20 year term in prison with appeal planned.
In New Bedford Massachusetts on December 28 the mother Eunice Bailey and sister Ruth Hunt of Mrs. Wilma Ybarbo collapsed upon learning she was sentenced to 20 years for killing her soldier husband in Germany. Mrs. Bailey vowed to do everything to spare her daughter.
The Somerset Week of Prayer, sponsored by the Ministerial Association, opens Sunday evening at the Church of the Brethren with Rev. J. F. Messenger as speaker. Services run 7:30 p.m. daily at various churches through January 9 with Bishop G. D. Batdorf of Dayton, Ohio, continuing afternoon and evening services for a week.
Sumner Welles remains in satisfactory condition after a frostbite incident near his Iron Hill Maryland home. Doctors caution several days before deciding on possible amputations as his fingers and toes were frozen. Mrs. Welkes hopes he may leave hospital within a week.

Hungary reports that Josef Mindszenty and 10 church figures were arrested on treason spying and undemocratic activity charges. The interior ministry said a metal box at Mindszenty’s home held documents and admissions of guilt including a $50,000 black market currency disposal and plots involving western diplomats.
Cairo reports Prime Minister Mahmoud Fawzi Nasr Pasha was killed inside the interior ministry by Hamid Ahmed Hassan, a 21 year old Fuad I University veterinary student and member of the Muslim Brotherhood. The assassin, who attempted suicide, was arrested after guards intervened. Police say the Brotherhood had been outlawed weeks earlier for alleged terrorism.
