A would be robber tried to hold up a Rockwood Main Street car wash near closing time but was struck by attendant Ron Benford with a shovel. The assailant fled in a yellow car, leaving his mask behind. No money was taken.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird defends five alleged North Vietnamese violations of the 1968 bombing halt and signals possible further air strikes to protect withdrawing U S forces. He cites shelling of Saigon, demilitarized zone breaches, stalled peace talks, and increased attacks on U S planes as evidence.
U S jets hammered North Vietnam targets Monday in a heavy round the clock raid with about 350 air force navy and marine planes from bases in Thailand and carriers in the South China Sea. The operation aims to choke Hanoi supply lines into Laos and Cambodia and protect U S troops in Vietnam. The Pentagon said it would announce results when appropriate and North Vietnam condemned the strikes while Hanoi claimed U S planes hit hospitals. In Laos government forces faced a setback at the Plain of Jars as Pathet Lao troops overran high ground nearby. South Vietnam reported light battlefield activity.
The November trade gap reached 227.2 million, leaving 11 months of 1971 at 1.7 billion in red. Thousands of ducks and wading birds flock to the Thames estuary as pollution cleanups restore life to the river. Carp are reappearing and the estuary hosts species long absent from London waters. Peter Grant of the London Natural History Society credits the Port of London Authority for the revival. Shelduck and pintail ducks, once rare for seven decades, now number in the hundreds.
About two dozen Vietnam Veterans Against the War protesters briefly occupied Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia and displayed the U S flag upside down on the roof. They entered at the tourist entrance and told crowds the action was to protest Indochina bombings before police peacefully removed them in 45 minutes.

Bill Hassel, 18, a Shanksville Stonycreek High School graduate, is undergoing cobalt cancer treatment after his left leg was amputated. A fundraising marathon basketball game at the high school, beginning Wednesday and ending Friday, will support his medical bills at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Community members, led by classmates Rodney Gohn and Jeff Baltver, organized the event with school officials backing the effort.
The long Christmas weekend saw 614 people die in traffic crashes from 6 p m Thursday to midnight Sunday. The figure matches a prior NSC forecast of 520 to 620 and compares with 509 in 1970, the previous three day holiday toll. The highest three day toll was 720 in 1965. Officials anticipate 400 to 500 deaths for the upcoming New Year’s weekend.
