In intense clashes around Saigon and Da Nang on Friday allied forces claim 236 enemy killed in four battles near the capital and the port city. US losses total two killed and 27 wounded with South Vietnamese casualties at least 17 dead and 50 wounded.
Apollo 8 returned from a half million mile voyage to the moon and landed 5,000 yards from the USS Yorktown in the Pacific. Astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders praised by officials after a flawless 147 hour flight and a safe deorbit and splashdown.
A North Central Airlines Convair 580 crashed into a hangar at O'Hare Airport in drizzle and fog killing 30 aboard and injuring 15 others. Eight drum and bugle corps youths practicing in the hangar survived. The flight departed Minneapolis with stops en route.
A large storm system blankets the nation with rain fog and snow. Freezing rain closes roads and Ohio reports traffic deaths while Maryland and Ohio see numerous fender benders. An Ozark Air Lines DC9 crash in heavy snow causes no serious injuries.
Three people were injured in a southbound route 53 crash near Hooversville. Driver William Gindlesperger, 24, and Nora Wagner, 68, listed in fair condition at Somerset Community Hospital. Hastings Wagner, 72, in good condition. Gindlesperger lost control after leaving the berm and struck a truck driven by Wagner. Damages: 3000 to the car and 400 to the truck. State Police conduct the investigation.
A self styled minister accused of abducting and slaying 10 year old Pamela Powers was held under heavy guard after police received anonymous threats. Anthony Erthell Williams 24 an escapee from a Missouri mental hospital remains in custody on an open murder charge as community sentiment runs hot in Des Moines Iowa.
Gov. Shafer vetoed a bill raising miners asthma victim payments from 75 to 100 dollars monthly, citing lack of accompanying revenue to keep the budget balanced. The veto also blocks a $100 monthly hepatitis-related payment for nurses. The measure passed with bipartisan support, despite Republican defections. Rep. Harry Englehart Jr. led the bill.
The Atomic Energy Commission said China conducted a atmospheric nuclear test near Lop Nor in western China with a yield around three megatons. U.S. officials caution about interpretation, noting no evidence of an ICBM and awaiting air-sample analysis to confirm multiple details.
The Consumer Price Index jumped four tenths of one percent in November, lifting the index to 123.4 and eroding the 1968 pay gains of about 45 million workers. Overall living costs rose 4.7 percent for the year, the highest since 1951, with grocery prices dropping but housing, clothing, transportation, and medical costs mounting.

Russians watched Apollo 8 landings with admiration as the crew returned to the Yorktown after winning their semi final heat in the race toward the moon. Moscow Radio praised the American achievement and President Podgorny sent congratulations to President Johnson. Tass called the astronauts brave and capable and Novosti noted cosmonauts sent greetings from Washington.
The 13 year legal saga of Vincent P Brady, an airline mechanic, nears resolution as the Supreme Court weighs whether his union dues dispute and job reinstatement merits final review. Brady previously won reinstatement and back pay after challenging a 1955 union dues increase and later seeks the right to sue for damages.
The USS Pueblo skipper Cmdr. Lloyd M. Bucher and nine crewmen will receive Purple Heart medals next week for wounds from the capture. Most of the 82 freed crewmen likely qualify for the Purple Heart for injuries during 11 months in a North Korean prison. The Navy conducts its most exhaustive inquiry into the ship's loss as the crew begins debriefing after arrival in the United States.

Sixty six people aboard an Ozark Air Lines DC9 survived a belly landing after striking trees on takeoff in Sioux City Iowa. The jetliner touched down on 14 inches of snow with the snow easing the impact. About 35 were hospitalized for cuts and scratches and 12 were admitted including pilot P G Sweeney.
