PORT SAID Egypt December 27 United Nations and Egyptian spokesmen said the southern end of the Suez canal would begin clearance tomorrow under UN supervision. Two dredgers—one Swedish and one Egyptian naval vessel—are set to start on three or four obstacles. Wheeler cited mine clearance as a prerequisite and noted a broader salvage fleet of 18 vessels is ready, with aims to build to about 80. No word on when larger British or French salvage ships will move south.
