The Associated Press reports 609 traffic deaths during the Christmas period, with total holiday fatalities reaching 782 across all causes. Officials fear repeat losses in the New Year while urging safer driving and noting Canada’s lighter toll.
Eber Cockley a B and O station agent at Meyersdale marks 50 years in railroading. His rise began as mail messenger and baggage master in Shippensburg, learned Morse code, became telegrapher in Western Maryland, joined B and O as telegrapher clerk in 1910, later served as agent and wire chief. He earned 45 years in the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and chaired the B and O Telegraphers committee since 1927. In Somerset he also opened the county’s first public library in 1913.
U S army said MSgt. Mike Kliman of Brooklyn was released by Russian authorities in East Berlin after a traffic accident. He had vanished with Communist police after leaving Karlshorst hospital. Kliman visited his Berlin born wife and her parents before the incident. The army noted poor visibility and slippery roads as causes and said officials hope for his return despite Russia’s stance on East Berlin.
David J Weimer, the town's oldest mail carrier, introduces a light collapsible two wheel cart to haul bags in Somerset. Made by a Chicago firm and a Christmas gift from his wife, the device aids wear on his uniform and may convert to a golf cart. Government approval exists but county issuance is not yet, with a thousand carts shipped for experiments nationwide.
An autopsy is ordered in the deaths of two brothers who ran a Suffolk grocery near Shenandoah. Robert Wagner aged 56 died Saturday and Delroy Wagner 47 died Sunday. Schuylkill County Detective Chief William Keach says the deaths appear natural but autopsy was ordered due to their proximity. Delroy leaves a widow and two children. another brother and three sisters survive.
Noah Shultz 76 of Somerset was struck by a car at South Center avenue and Patriot street at 9 15 p m. He is in fair condition with nose cuts and bruises. Robert J Glessner 33 of East Patriot street was turning left and could not stop for the pedestrian. In a Route 219 collision near Clair and Bettys three additional victims were listed in fair condition Sheldon Suder 42 of West Patriot street and Michael Tulanko Jr 38 of Acosta were the drivers. Suder's son Roberts suffered a fractured jaw contusions. Suder himself had chest contusions. Tulanko suffered possible rib fractures head cuts and leg abrasions. Car damage estimated at $400 for Suder and $800 for Tulanko.
A tractor trailer operator Floyd L. Geno 34 Jamaica NY was killed instantly on Tuesday morning when his truck crashed seven miles west of the Donegal interchange. Police say he fell asleep at the wheel and the rig went over an embankment 150 feet rolling several times. Damage valued at 15000 dollars.
Harold Wade McCarthey 34 of Reading Mines Stoystown entered a guilty plea to two counts of forging and passing worthless checks drawn on a mythical Fin iki Coal company. He was recommitted to Somerset county jail in default of $2,000 bond. Arrest followed an attempt to cash a third check in Stoystown. Also, Duane Winters 25 of Jenner posted $500 bond after charge of driving with suspended license.
A Ferrellton mother reported her 11 year old son missing to police. The boy was found safe in protective custody after a motorist unable to locate his home brought him to state police. He was later identified as Thomas Awtey, son of Mrs. Catherine Awtey, and returned home.
James B. Landis of Somerset was appointed to the county permanent board of viewers by Judge Thomas F. Lansberry on Tuesday. He succeeds the late P. G. Cohber.
The Senate internal security subcommittee released a 100 page handbook accusing the Communist party of operating through fronts such as the American Youth Congress and National Negro Labor Council to extend influence. It brands the party as a Russian inspired conspiracy and urges Americans to spot and avoid such fronts.
Judge Thomas Lansberry denied the parole request of John J. Onstead of Windber on a voluntary manslaughter conviction. He is serving a two year less one day term for killing his widowed mother, having served 14 months. Allegheny County attorney Harold Masters would sponsor him if paroled, while Deputy Sheriff Jacob Pyle called him a model prisoner.
Ham Fisher creator of Joe Palooka was found dead in a friend's studio. Police called it an apparent suicide after a note cited failing eyesight and diabetes and that he had swallowed pills. Fisher, self taught artist, began in Wilkes Barre and launched Joe Palooka with McNaught Syndicate in 1980, the strip then appeared in about 800 newspapers.
In Pittsburgh the Liederkrantz Club a German social organization in Beltzhoover suffered a blaze causing about 75 000 dollars in damage. One fireman was slightly injured while fighting the flames.
In California's flood week, 34 dead plus 12 in Oregon, with dozens more missing. Navy air and coast guard crews rescued hundreds as deltas stayed contained. Fair weather forecast brings relief. 300 National Guardsmen deployed to Yuba City and Marysville to guard against unsafe returns.
The Eagles held their annual treat for 1160 children at the Eagles Hall on Saturday afternoon. Candy and fruit were distributed by the trustees led by Nick Mangne. Santa Claus, played by Charles Jackson, greeted children at the door. Treats were also delivered to Seay Memorial Home and the Children's Aid Home and to ill or absent children around town.
More than 200 Westinghouse Electric employees forced through a picket line to reach the Sharon plant where they stayed inside for hours after shift end amid violence fears. Several injuries reported. police present as talks resumed in Pittsburgh.
A Westinghouse Corp official said striking International Electrical Workers Union members damaged cars of employees returning to work at the small motors plant in Union City Indiana. Plant manager Irving Slauer said pickets hammered on the cars with fists and kicked them. no workers among the 101 passing the lines were injured.
A United States air force jet exploded in flight over Levittown Long Island. The pilot parachuted to safety as the wreckage crashed into a street with homes. No deaths or injuries occurred. A parked car was destroyed moments after an insurance agent left the vehicle. The plane narrowly missed a home where a grandmother tended four children. Pilot Capt T B Puechler of Jamesport N Y bailed out at about 3000 feet.
The Leader administration signals readiness to invite Republican leaders for talks aimed at closing Pennsylvania’s fiscal gap. A Democrat spokesman hints at possible later support for a 2 percent personal income tax and higher business taxes. Local school financing and state aid distribution are also urged to tighten funding standards as talks resume after holidays.
A U S air force helicopter lifted 14 crewmen from the Japanese freighter Honda Maru after it wrecked off Honshu in 40-foot waves. The destroyer Ozbourn saved three Shinya Maru No 2 crew from a liferaft. Missing vessels include Chiyoda Maru No 12 and five fishing boats. Han da Maru broke up in 65 mph winds near Hachinohe.
In Sagle Idaho on December 27 Benjamin J Hartley 96 died ending the nations longest marriage of 80 years to Drusilla Hartley who wed at age 16 in Tennessee. Hartley had been in failing health since a July 11 fall on his son's farm near Sagle.
Pittsburgh police charge 27-year-old George Yeager and 23-year-old Richard Horne with pistol whipping their landlord at 20 East General Robinson Street and robbing him of 117 dollars over the weekend. Officers also accuse them of two additional robberies.
All Rockwood locations will close Wednesday afternoon December 28 and reopen Friday night at 9:00 PM. Saturday hours end at 6:00 PM. Stores remain closed Monday.
President Eisenhower will travel to Key West Florida for about two weeks of rest and exercise after a heart attack recovery. He will send the State of the Union on Jan 5 and clerks will read it in Congress. Doctors reportedly advised a warm climate. a return to Washington is unlikely for the January 3 opening.
Dr. W. Robert Korns of Somerset was re elected as president of the Somerset county board of education at a reorganization meeting in the county superintendent’s office. John Peck of Fort Hill was chosen vice president. Verna G. Barron and G. G. Grazier retained the roles of secretary and treasurer. The board approved a veteran’s agriculture shop program at Somerset joint high school starting January 9, with sessions each Monday for ten weeks, and discussed plans for a late February or early March directors’ meeting.
