Johnstown airport manager said a chartered DC-3 could have landed there last Wednesday night instead of continuing to Pittsburgh on a flight that killed 10. The plane, carrying 23 servicemen and 5 crew, ran out of fuel and ditched on the Monongahela river. 14 servicemen and 4 crew swam ashore while the pilot and 9 others died. Air officials cited head winds and lighting issues. the airport maintained lights were on nightly and fully operational at the time.
