The U S Department of Agriculture reports 147 554 Pennsylvanians participated in October, up 455. recipients paid 1 821 474 in coupons, receiving 845 037 in bonus value. In Somerset County, 34 644 in purchases yielded 16 873 in bonuses totaling 51 517.

Macao Replies to Red Chinese Demands Amid Tense Border Clashes

Macao authorities issued a new reply to Beijing as thousands of Red Guards gathered across the border and gunboats patrolled offshore. Leftists pushed anti-Portuguese meetings and called for arrest of Nationalist leaders while representatives crossed into China with demands to shut down all Nationalist activities and draft a public apology for riots that left eight dead and many injured. Four Red Chinese gunboats were reported on patrol.

Nation May Escape Record Holiday Toll

The nation edged toward avoiding a 10th consecutive record holiday traffic death toll for Christmas weekend with 468 deaths in a 78 hour period ending Monday. Snow slowed travel, reducing fatalities and prompting Safety Council officials to forecast 460 to 540 deaths for the New Year period.

In South Vietnam B 52s hit Viet Cong bases and suspected troop concentrations in the DMZ while Australian Vietnamese forces engaged a Viet Cong group east of Saigon.

Washington AP reports a study on U S drinking habits finding 12 percent of the population are heavy drinkers. Most are male and upper middle class, but abstainers outnumber heavy drinkers nearly three to one. Dr Ira H Cisin of George Washington University discusses a 2 746 person surveillance. The poll notes abstainers and other groups including more women joining the heavy drinking group.

Gandhi Deters Immolation in Amritsar Crisis

In Amritsar six Sikhs planned self immolation but agreed to halt after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi offered to mediate. Fateh Singh, revered by Sikhs, ended his fast by drinking juice as talks on Punjabi Suba and Chandigarh division proceeded. The government set up curfews and will use a high level commission for remaining disputes.

Five toughs escape Dartmoor prison in broad daylight

Five London criminals tunneled over a 30 foot wall at Dartmoor Prison and fled into mist while guards and roadblocks searched the moors. The break occurred at 2:30 pm as six inmates overwhelmed staff and used gym equipment to scale the wall. Police set roadblocks as darkness fell and the escape marked the prison's fifteenth this year.

Somerset County Liquid Fuels Tax Refund Approved

The State Department of Revenue approved a $74,811 county share for Somerset County from liquid fuels tax refunds totaling $10.3 million for the six months ending December 1. Funds must be used within county borders for roads and bridges. distribution to townships and boroughs is at the commissioners’ discretion.
