The National Safety Council reports a slowing pace of traffic fatalities as Christmas weekend ends. By 10 p.m. EST 427 died in crashes, 73 in fires, and 74 in other accidents, with total violent deaths at 574. If trends hold, this may be the safest Christmas weekend since 1949.
Four New York City patrolmen rushed to revive a six week old in the Upper East Side after the infant stopped breathing. They repeatedly blew air into the child's lungs while learning the mother had active tuberculosis and the twin was born with the disease. Despite efforts the baby died. autopsy to determine tuberculosis status was pending.
During the Christmas weekend Pennsylvania recorded 18 fatalities from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday across highways fires and other accidents. The toll included eight highway deaths five in a home fire five in other accidents with victims in Bradford Bucks Allegheny Philadelphia and Berks counties. Notable incidents include Ulysses Scrugg 48 of Athens in a Brad ford County two car collision and five DuPont children aged 5 to 12 killed in a Feasterville basement fire.

Somerset volunteer firefighters were dispatched at about 7 30 p m Christmas Day to a flue fire at the home of Dominick Cuginne on East Garret street. Police Chief Newton Picking reported no damage. About 28 firefighters responded.
A Dallas man known as Old Will Richardson celebrated his 101st birthday on Christmas Day. Born a slave in Marshall he spent his life in Texas and still does some yard work though he is gradually failing. He lives alone in a Negro section home and remains able to answer the phone.
Snow and sleet fell across Somerset County Monday night but most roads remained ice free at 1 30 am Tuesday. The Meyersdale area reported icy roads with temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees. The Turnpike noted a few icy spots while forecasts showed improving weather today.
Several street lights were out on West Main Street Monday night. A Penelee employee suggested a blown fuse as a possible cause. The lights, on series and direct circuits, remained dark at 1 30 a.m. today.
In Springfield Ohio a 19 year old youth Martin L Griffith sought Naval Academy admission after passing academic tests but was rejected for a congenital dental jaw defect. His congressman nominated him again for Annapolis despite the mismatch.
In Feasterville Pennsylvania a basement kitchen fire killed five of six DuPont children while parents attended a midnight Christmas Mass. Investigators traced the blaze to stored combustible material overheated by a basement oil furnace. The home suffered about 4800 dollars in damage and the bodies were to be flown to Holyoke Massachusetts for funeral services.
Gen. Douglas MacArthur accepts Norfolk invitation to house his war mementoes, decorations and papers in a planned memorial here. The city will renovate its 111 year old courthouse at a cost near half a million dollars and consider renaming it MacArthur Square.
Western scientists report that Communist China has rapidly expanded science and technology since 1949. They cite sixfold to sevenfold gains in coal and iron and steel output and growth in geology and chemistry as China aims for a top rank within a decade.
Two women treated and released at Somerset Community hospital after an automobile collision on Route 53 one mile south of New Centerville at 7 20 p m. Violet King and Ada King of Rockwood RD 3 sustained facial rib and knee and chest injuries respectively while James Toscano 72 of Connfluence drove over the center line into George King 58 of Rockwood RD 3. Damages to both vehicles were about 300 each. A separate hit and run on Route 30 Saturday at 3 20 p m damaged Denver King 19 of Boswell RD 2 with an estimated 50 in damage.
Snow flurries and colder air moved across the Midwest Monday and aimed at northern New England. Readings stayed below freezing in many areas, with a low of one degree above zero at Grand Forks North Dakota. Sunshine warmed the East and South with highs around 73 in Miami and 67 in Los Angeles as Pacific moisture brought rain to the Northwest coast and snow to mountains.
Paris reports a French atom bomb exploded early today in the Sahara desert. The ministry announced the test details and location as part of the nuclear program news.
President elect Kennedy and top aides held a long Palm Beach meeting on civilian and military space roles and boosting diplomatic representation abroad. The group discussed ambassador expense allowances, State Department finances, and the interplay of Johnson Kerr Rooney and Dillon, with Salinger noting focus on strengthening both the space program and overseas representation.
James M. Landis delivers a bristling critique of federal regulators saying political appointees and outside influence hobble operations. The study urges a major shake up and new legislation to curb lobbying and restore merit-based appointments across agencies including the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Federal Power, Communications and Interstate Commerce commissions. Dickey on West Garrett Street won first in the outdoor nativity scene category at Somerset lighting contest. St Peter's Catholic church took second. no third award issued. Somerset Garden Club sponsored the event with multiple firsts and second places for design originality and child appeal. Judges from the Artists Association remained anonymous. Cash awards funded by local businesses and banks.
An inquest is scheduled Wednesday at Meyersdale Municipal Building into the traffic death of Mrs. Wilma Maust 61 of Accident Maryland. She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband Asa Maust which collided with a vehicle driven by Raymon Lyons 38 of Ebensburg on Route 219 south of Meyersdale. Lyons was injured and Maust died later of natural causes. Coroner Robert H. Halverson will preside at 7 p.m.
The community observes a week of prayer from Sunday Jan. 1 to Sunday Jan. 8 at the Somerset Church of the Brethren with Rev. Clifton A Best of Harrisburg Episcopal diocese as speaker. Services run nightly at 7 30 except Saturday with free parking at First EUB. Choirs rotate among local churches and topics include The Secret of Real Faith and What Happens at Death.
