King George VI and President Truman urge calm, Pope Pius XII promotes prayer, and Adenauer stresses defense amid a volatile world. Bethlehem and Nazareth echo the regional unrest as UN trusteeship efforts falter.
In Vatican City on Christmas Day 1950 the pope marked the end of the Holy Year The Great Return with Saint Peter's Square emptying after crowds of pilgrims left Rome's hotels. He expressed hope for peace and signed a bull extending the holy year to 1951 while noting unmet aims for world peace.
New York city donors answered an urgent Red Cross appeal for blood for immediate shipment to the Far East. By 11 a.m. Saturday more than 150 Manhattan donors had appointments, with many offers from New Jersey and beyond. The Red Cross urged follow up donations this week as a Sunday shipment to San Francisco loomed.
Scranton on December 25. William Martin a 23 year old Scranton man was struck while crossing near his name by a car driven by Joseph Long of Dunmore. A second car driven by Daniel Cicero of Dunmore followed and ran over the body. Both drivers charged with involuntary manslaughter.
In West Berlin a young American soldier, Herbert Nimz, 20, met his girlfriend Erika Busch, 16, in the Nimz home. The couple planned a quick East to West Berlin marriage with Army approval and life at Fort Devens, Mass. Nimz credited General Lucius D. Clay for his citizenship and service.

The body of Bishop Hugh C. Boyle head of the Pittsburgh Catholic diocese will lie in state at St Pauls Cathedral after being moved from St Pauls monastery. About 800 priests will take part in the translation of the body with Bishop John F Dearden presiding. The 77 year old prelate died last Friday after a lengthy illness. a pontifical mass of requiem will be celebrated Thursday at 10 am by Edward Cardinal Mooney archbishop of Detroit.
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer is added to Santa’s traditional reindeer lineup alongside Dancer and Prancer. A company has issued luncheon napkins and a paper tablecloth featuring Rudolph in the design, aimed at appealing to children.
Four men lost their lives in three crashes on the Pennsylvania turnpike and Route 711 near New Florence and Breezewood. George A. Kregar, 41, of Confluence died after his car hit a stalled tank truck near New Florence. L Wainwright Wright Jr., 23, of Homewood died in a turnpike crash west of the Allegheny tunnel. Alexandra Artemko, 26, of Canonsburg and Robert Costello, 21, of Pittsburgh were injured in the Somerset crash that sent Artemko to hospital with head injuries and Costello in critical condition. George and Mrs. Ford died after their car skidded on ice and struck a fence near Breezewood.
State police report two men injured in a Saturday crash on Route 219 north of Somerset. George J. Walker of Blough and Frank C. Carr of Sipesville collided. Walker suffered facial lacerations and hand injuries. Both were taken to Somerset Community Hospital. Darr discharged. Walker listed in fair condition. Both vehicles damaged with windshield breaks.
A teenage WAC, Pvt. Joycie M. Miller of Basile Louisiana, was killed and seven army personnel injured in a midnight mass related crash on the Wrightstown Pemerton road near Fort Dix New Jersey. Four are in serious condition. one is critical. Corporal Gerald Troidl of Buffalo New York sustained a right ankle laceration and was listed in good condition.
President Truman and family spent Christmas at their Independence home with news of the Hungnam evacuation boosting spirits. He thanked Far East military leaders and praised General MacArthur and General Almond, then enjoyed a family dinner and light holiday plans.
Two men, Frank Trulio and Joseph Bianco, were arrested in New York after robbing nine hotels on Christmas Eve and admitting to 30 hotel stickups in two weeks. They were caught while checking into a tenth hotel, with $350 loot and held without bail. Police identified them from hotel lobby descriptions and night clerks named several Manhattan hotels involved.
Forty Dutch air cadets from Randolph Field Tex arrive in Miami for Christmas festivities hosted by local Americans. Mayor William Wolforth greets them as Aviation Cadet John Shaddick coordinates visits, dinners, hotel parties, and a special race at Tropical Park titled The Flying Dutchman honoring the guests.
General MacArthur shifts the 10th Corps from Hungnam to the 8th Army as the Hungnam withdrawal nears completion. Marines, South Koreans, and U. S. Seventh Division leave in trucks and by sea, with nighttime convoy operations, harbor activity, and artillery actions marking the retreat.
President Truman will fly to Washington tomorrow for top-level talks with Secretary Acheson and Secretary Marshall on Korea and defense matters. The Blair House session will cover Eisenhower’s European command, Korean developments with Chinese activity, and home preparedness as the 82nd Congress nears.
U.N. forces completed a historic withdrawal from Hungnam, pulling 105000 troops and about 100000 anti Communist North Korean civilians from the northeast beachhead. Maj. Gen. Edward M. Almond announced all elements are at sea or landed near Pusan Pohang while U.N. troops brace for a potential Chinese offensive in the west.
Somerset volunteer firefighters revisited past Christmas incidents including the Hyndman blaze that killed two, damaged the business district, and drew more than 30 companies from nearby states. They also recalled fires at Bakersville farm, Stoystown apartments, and Homer Shumaker’s West Union street home.
Police reported that San Franciscans stayed off the streets during a gala night. Only 10 arrests for drunk driving were made, a notably low figure for the holiday.
West Virginia sees occasional snow mixed with rain in the south on Tuesday, then snow, wind, and much colder conditions Tuesday night. Wednesday brings snow flurries and continued cold. Maryland remains cloudy with snow mainly Tuesday mixed with rain in the south, windy and colder Tuesday night, followed by clearing and cold Wednesday.
