Pope Paul VI urged peace in Viet Nam in his Christmas message urging negoti ations over armed conflict. He appealed to both sides to reconsider and stop, stressing that true wisdom lies in peace and that the Church of half a billion members backs every effort toward a peaceful settlement. He welcomed a Christmas cease-fire and warned that powerful arms threaten justice and human brotherhood. He spoke to all mankind as brothers, stressing the Church’s role as messenger of peace. Six Permits Approved By Water Board
The State Sanitary Water Board approved drainage permits for four Sanner Brothers Coal Company mines in Somerset County totaling 435 acres. Two mines are in Elk Lick Township, the others in Black Township, with basins required to neutralize water before entering streams. Additional permits were issued to Coal Junction Coal Company for a 26 acre strip and auger mine in Lincoln Township with a 75 foot undisturbed earth barrier along streams. Mack Coal Company permits were denied for two Southampton Township mines. C and P Coal Company received a 28 acre Shade Township mine permit with water treated to neutrality before discharge.
