Sen Rene Coty to be France's next president chosen by Parliament on the 13th ballot in Versailles. He won 477 votes to 329 for Marcel Edom Naegelen, with 436 needed, ending a week of wrangling in the joint session at the Palace of Versailles.
U S officials reacted with limited cheer as France elected President Rene Coty. President Eisenhower sent congratulations stressing leadership for peace and human dignity, while questions remained on the European Defense Community Treaty and Indochina.
