Lebanese boatmen removed the last of the passengers and crew from the wrecked Champollion after at least 16 died in desperate attempts to reach shore. Rescue boats battled surf as the liner split in two four miles south of Beirut with 328 aboard. Capt. Henri Bourde survived as the British cruiser Kenya stood by and messages were relayed.
