President plans to name a War Labor Board to handle closed shop issues. Government moves aim to prevent strikes or lockouts while national conflict continues. Board will oversee labor disputes and ensure wartime production stability.
President Roosevelt closed a wartime labor management conference by accepting key points for no strikes or lockouts and peaceful dispute settlement. A war labor board would handle issues, but employers insisted it not arbitrate the closed shop. They urged preserving the right to work without mandatory union membership during the war.
Seventy five servicemen were recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross for a trans Pacific bombing mission three months before Pearl Harbor. Captain Colin P. Kelly Jr. destroyed the Japanese battleship Haruna in the first battle of the war and perished during the attack. The Honolulu to Fort Stotsenburg flight was completed without loss. Major Emmett O'Donnell Jr. of Brooklyn led the mission as commander.
Rangoon Burma December 23 A war communique reports nine Japanese bombers and one fighter shot down and several more damaged during a large raid on Rangoon. Three British fighters were lost in fighting the raid.
Postmaster Oscar F. Sutliffe reported a Somerset patron purchased 2,000 ten cent defense savings stamps, the largest single such purchase at the office. He had secured a large supply from Pittsburgh after learning two million stamps were ordered, with 500,000 arriving that morning and all sold by 10 o'clock.
Russian communiqués report Gorbachevo retaken a key railway junction between Tula and Orel, with over 50 miles gained as Wehrmacht forces retreat across the Volkhov. Northwest front pushes toward Leningrad amid harsh blizzards. Moscow front sees aggressive moves toward Maloyaroslavets and Mozhaisk while Sevastopol remains under stiff Russian defense.
The December 23 navy communique hinted Wake Island may fall to a landing by an enemy force. Yet optimism lingered as Navy sources did not declare defeat and recounted Wake’s defenders holding off 13 aerial assaults in 16 days, shooting down planes and wiping out two Japanese ships.
Ev an B. Lloyd of Johnstown was appointed today to Johnstown's housing authority to serve until August 7 1946, filling a vacancy.
Forces clash near Atimonan with Jans Land Hane Wane still held by British troops. Mt. Cameron looms near center of the island as Victoria Peak becomes a scene of bitter fighting.
United States Army reports a new Japanese landing near Atimonan on Luzon's east coast and continued heavy fighting in Lingayen Gulf as Japanese forces press trenches against American and Filipino troops. Bridges and towns along Mindanao and Luzon show Japanese activity with rumors of ships sunk and labor conscription reported by refugees.
British Canadian and Indian forces beat back Japanese at Mt Cameron on Hong Kong island as siege holds, with heavy losses on both sides. Canadian Brig. Lawson reported killed with senior staff. Japanese claim seven forts still held near Victoria. Royal Rifles of Canada participate in defense as Malaya front remains unchanged.
Washington December 23 A federal grand jury indicted Laura Ingalls 38 of New York a renowned woman pilot on a charge of failing to register as a foreign agent.
Winston Churchill told American newsmen at the White House that recent events, notably Russia’s victory and U S and British unity, mark a turning point in the war. He spoke beside President Roosevelt, after a staff meeting with Allied officers, and discussed Singapore and Wake Island.
Reports from Europe say Germany plans a fast push into French Africa as Petain resigns amid German pressure. Admiral Darlan reportedly takes control of Vichy France while troops reposition toward the Spanish border and North Africa. A Berlin spokesman cites open possibilities for axis action.
