Two freighters sank in a North Sea storm. The Narva with 28 crew vanished after signaling distress near Stavander, while the Boswell’s 14 crew were saved. The Norwegian liner Leda reported sighting the Narva and launched lifeboats as searchers scoured the area.
Christmas cheer will fill hospitals and institutions district wide as plans unfold. Seay Memorial Home will host 22 children with two large turkeys and festive decor on every floor. The Children's Aid Home meal is funded by Mrs. Beachy with 18 youngsters and theater outings. Somerset Community Hospital plans five turkeys for about 70 patients plus guests, with Garden Club favors. Somerset State Hospital and County Home prepare meals for around 750 and 800 people respectively, with decorations and special trays. The county jail will serve the same turkey dinner to about ten inmates, weathering a potential kitchen upgrade as Sheriff Walker’s family prepares.

A Sunday two car crash near Brotherton caused about $1,000 damage to the vehicles. State police report Shirley Boden 21 of Rockwood struck Ernest E. Stahl 26 of Somerset at the crest of a hill. No injuries were reported.

In Redding California a newborn girl was found stabbed to death in a Christmas box on Lovers' Lane. Sheriff Balma reports 23 stab wounds and a head blow possibly from an ice pick. The incident occurred today as a homicide investigation begins.

GDP rose about 2 percent in early 1957 and fixed investment up 4 percent. wages rose about 5 percent after May increases. Ireland also showed important 1957 improvements following two bad years.
Premier Djuanda said drastic economic measures against the Dutch in Indonesia were necessary after the UN rejected talks on West New Guinea. Indonesia seized Dutch firms and ordered nonessential Dutch nationals to leave, with Dutch interests at about 1.5 billion dollars. Government spokesman Ganis Harsono called the situation normal and under control, signaling the ability to manage irregular activities amid the campaign.

He called the approach unfortunate and unfair and pressed for a more robust defense posture and fuller Gaither defense report disclosure. He praised Eisenhower as a strong salesman of American ideals.
President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles will deliver a half hour report on the Paris NATO talks. The program begins at 8 30 p m EST with live radio from Mutual CBS ABC and NBC and film telecasts on CBS ABC and NBC at 10 30 and 11 30 p.m. respectively. The talks aimed to counter the Soviet space age challenge and plan European base missiles and nuclear warheads while keeping open disarmament talks with Russia.
A two car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the New Stanton interchange left John Sendrey Jr. dead at Greensburg hospital. Fred Liller and his wife Velma were treated for lacerations. the Liller pickup struck the death car broadside after a U turn attempt.
Bonn chancellor Konrad Adenauer warns the West not to be deceived by Moscow's rocket diplomacy and long range missiles. He says negotiations with the East from weakness fail and urges NATO to deepen Western unity to maximize its potential.
A 42 year old skipper his wife 37 their son 16 and a 24 year old fisherman sailed a small fishing boat from Kolbert to Bornholm Denmark carrying a Christmas tree they sought asylum claiming Poland conditions were intolerable They asked to remain in Denmark to continue fishing aboard their ship the Victoria Names were withheld.
The Associated Press reports Sunday weather shows strong winds showers and scattered snowfall in the northwest while much of the country enjoys mild sunny conditions. Northern New England may see sprinkles and Lake Superior area could get snow flurries. Wet and snowy bands extend from the West into the Dakotas and northern California Nevada Colorado. Snow mainly in mountains with six inches reported in Butte Montana since Saturday.
