General MacArthur says American defenders have the situation well in hand as Japanese landings occur along a 20 mile stretch on Luzon island. Units along the coast report resilient defense and continued fighting.
Japanese sea borne troops supported by planes landed yesterday at Santo Tomas Lingayen gulf northwest of Manila as American forces held the line with tanks and artillery. MacArthur's headquarters reported strong American defense with several transports sunk and heavy air activity while southern theaters showed little communication.
Captain Farrow reports two U.S. planes attacked the submarine that torpedoed the tanker Emidio near Eureka California. The sub submerged then surfaced briefly and fired a torpedo, hitting the Emidio as one depth charge exploded and another was dropped. The sub's fate remains unconfirmed.
Unofficial reports say Japanese submarines missed three merchant ships near California while scoring one hit. Coast guard and witnesses described the Standard Oil tanker H M Story being torpedoed but evading, as the sub dropped a smoke screen and vanished.
London December 22. An RAF daylight raid on December 18 hit the gates of the drydock at West France, trapping the 28,000-ton battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in their war docks and causing new damage. Heavy bombs allegedly pierced midships and between hulls, while submarine pens at Ios also drew hits.
Five men were jailed over the weekend with Christmas in sight. Adornetto of Johnstown faces a hearing for burglary and larceny at Secherri’s roadhouse in Conemaugh Township for about five dollars taken.
