The Labor Department reports November inflation up three tenths of a percent, with consumer purchasing power rising eight tenths of a percent. Food costs fall for the first time since March while mortgage rates drop. overall prices for 1976 so far are up about 4.5 percent.
Somerset County commissioners expect a tentative budget excluding salaries by week’s end. Final adoption rests on negotiations with AFSCME. Vice chair Paul O Connor said the session with AFSCME is moved to Monday December 27. Any agreed terms will shape the final budget and potential tax changes. The panel also addressed other fiscal and personnel issues.
Chicago mourns Richard J. Daley as a power struggle looms with his allies, independents and Black leaders contesting the political machine. A temporary mayor will lead City Council until a six month election selects a new mayor for the remainder of Daley's term. Presidents elect Carter and other leaders plan to attend the funeral set for Wednesday.
The Liberian tanker Argo Merchant split in two after a collision with rough seas 27 miles southeast of Nantucket. Up to 75 percent of its 7.6 million gallons of heavy oil spilled into Georges Bank waters as crews faced 20 foot seas and 45 knot winds.
President elect Carter announced Harold Brown as secretary of defense and Patricia Roberts Harris as housing secretary along with Ray Marshall to head labor. He defended his AG nominee’s civil rights record and pledged to cut Pentagon waste and trim the defense budget by up to seven billion dollars while delaying further Cabinet reveals for a Chicago funeral.
Harrisburg AP Pennsylvanias Lottery Commission member Donald Cox urged adding number games and a sports pool to boost stagnating sales. He warned Philadelphia sales are weak, while executive director Lynn Nelson said sales last year set a record and expects gains with the numbers game.
Somerset basketball team defeats Meyersdale as the Laurel Mountain area sees partly sunny skies. The forecast calls for mid 20s highs, low near 2, with mostly cloudy conditions through Wednesday night and Thursday and light westerly winds. Snow chances are 20 percent Wednesday and 10 percent Wednesday night.
