Fidel Castro agreed to release 1113 Bay of Pigs prisoners in exchange for medicines and food valued at 53 million dollars. The first group would reach Miami by air, with Red Cross coordination and backing from banks. Prisoners will be flown to Miami in a four plane shuttle while ships load supplies in Port Everglades.

Nassau Bahamas AP dispatch reports Kennedy and Macmillan outlining a plan to build a multinational nuclear force centered on Polaris submarines within NATO by 1979. The agreement, dubbed the act of Nassau, would provide missiles to Britain and invite France into a three way framework. Kennedy invites De Gaulle to join a trilateral program with the United States and Britain.

Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Valerian Zorin condemned the move as unilateral and dangerous, while Adlai Stevenson said agreement with the Soviet Union on UN Congo components could come by Christmas. The eight man mission, led by Lt. Gen. Louis W. Truman, arrived in Leopoldville amid anti American protests.

The Justice Department asked the 5th Circuit to hold Mississippi Governor Barnett and Lt. Gov. Johnson in criminal contempt for blocking James Meredith’s enrollment at the University of Mississippi. The case could bring jail terms or fines if found in contempt.
Two accidents on icy county roads Friday sent three people to area hospitals. Nora Sterner and Lavern Pritts, Rockwood, were hurt when Sterner’s southbound car skidded on Route 653 and struck Glessner's Hotel in Garrett around 7:30 a.m. Neil Crain, 39, Latrobe, sustained a head laceration when his northbound car on Husband Road slipped, struck a snowbank, then hit an utility pole and turned, with Crain hospitalized at Somerset Community Hospital.
Gov. William Scranton announced the appointments of Dr. Charles L. Wilbur as health secretary Theodore B. Smith as revenue secretary and John K. Taver as commerce secretary all at $20 000 a year Wilbur is the first Lawrence appointee to be kept on Scranton plans to push industry and job growth in Pennsylvania Smith previously ran for Philadelphia district attorney and served in the homicide division Tabor is a Pittsburgh attorney and former GOP candidate for City Council in 1959
Two Republicans in Somerset were named by Gov. Lawrence to county boards of assistance. The Rev. James L. Lamadue and Mrs. Margaret Mickle, both of Somerset, are among the appointees subject to 1963 Senate confirmation.
The Federal Communications Commission announced a proposed FM channel for Somerset. Somerset would receive Channel 249A a Class A frequency. The assignment aims to expand local broadcasting options and serve the Somerset area.
