Federal tapes reveal ground controllers lost contact with a United Airlines jet and a Trans World Airlines Constellation as they sped toward a fatal collision. The jets crashed near Brooklyn and Staten Island, killing 135 people. The United flight 826 veered off course about 11 miles from the crash site.

Pints Collected for Red Cross in Rockwood Blood Drive
The Somerset county chapter collected 46 pints toward an 85 pint quota at Rockwood United Church of Christ. Eleanor Vincent said turnout was better than expected with 50 people, 41 pints used, 13 first time donors, four rejected, and 14 staff aides plus two canteen workers, two doctors and three nurses on site. Winter arrived with snow plows and hand shovels as Somerset County faced more than a week of cold weather. Schools resumed then closed, roads were treacherous, and police aided young children crossing at West Main and North Rosina toward Patriot Street School. A coroner’s jury ruled Charles Frank Yingling died accidentally after Pete Yelovich fired at a deer and struck Yingling on December 5 during deer season. Yingling, 27, Windber, died at Windber hospital. Yelovich, 46, Central City, testified alongside others at the Windber inquest. A southbound truck skidded on Route 53 near Somerset and struck a sedan. A 13 year old boy in the car was hospitalized with a possible skull injury.
